Planning on taking over 2020? Some badass shows to watch
From the fjords of Denmark to the brownstones of New York, these tough-talkers are channelling the big energy you need this decade.
Be fearless this year and tackle life’s challenges head-on by watching these badass shows streaming on Showmax.
One of the best TV shows of 2019, Succession follows the utterly wealthy and tragically dysfunctional Roy family who don’t mind doing terrible things to each other as they scramble to succeed their father, Logan Roy, head of a huge media conglomerate. The Roys are spoilt and entitled, and they have all the traits we abhor in the uber-rich 1%, but they are badass in the way they embrace their wealth. They are not looking to be liked, they have never needed it – just a family of billionaires doing or saying anything they want, to other people and to each other, without any consequences. But that’s the thing about having “f*** you money.”
Check out Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti in Billions if you are looking for something similar.
From Ragnar Lothbrok to Lagertha to Bjorn Ironside to Ivar the Boneless, Vikings is full of badass characters who have given us some of the show’s most memorable moments. A fearless warrior among men, who can forget how Lagertha took back control of Hedeby from her usurper would-be husband Kalf? Or the many times she stood up for herself and for her dignity even against the great Ragnar Lothbrok.
Currently in its sixth and final season, Vikings has no intention of slowing down as it delivers a bloody battle for Norway, and of course some shocking twists and deaths that see some of our favourite characters enter Valhalla.
Easily one of the most badass shows of all time, Sons of Anarchy follows Jax Teller and his motorcycle gang who fight to keep the balance of power in the little fictional town of Charming even as Jax struggles to lead the gang like his father would have wanted. It’s not an easy job for anyone, and especially not for Jax who is dealing with much more than just the violence and mayhem that the gang has embraced for years.
Watch Sons of Anarchy’s spin-off Mayans M.C S1-2 also on Showmax.
Which TV character could be more badass than Prison Break’s Michael Scofield? He tattooed his whole body with the plans of Fox River State Penitentiary, a prison he helped design, just so he could break out his brother from the inside. If there’s one thing that Prison Break taught us it’s that there’s no such thing as an impossible plan, and Scofield is the badass genius we all need in our lives.
The rich and powerful getting exactly what they deserve. Sign me up – especially if they are the kind who use their influence to harm others. When Revenge first introduced us to Emily Thorne, the young woman who moves to the Hamptons to exact her revenge on the wealthy Graysons for what they did to her father, no one prepared us for the unending drama, plot twists, scheming and betrayals that were to follow.
On one hand, Emily is the quintessential girl-next-door, on the other she’s cold and calculating, seamlessly planting herself into the lives of the very people she wants to destroy. She meets her match in Victoria Grayson, the queen of the Hamptons and the matriarch of the Grayson family because what’s a good revenge story without a worthy opponent?
Harvey Specter once said: “When you’re backed against the wall, break the goddam thing down.” And that’s the badassery attitude we must all adopt in 2020.
But awesome as he may be, Harvey Specter isn’t the only one who’s proven that he can swim with sharks in the cutthroat world of Suits. Of course there’s Mike, Donna and even Louis Litt, but may we never forget that Harvey wouldn’t be the lawyer he is without the mentorship of the fierce, incomparable Jessica Pearson who left the show in the seventh season. Watch Suits on Showmax and find your inner Harvey Specter.
