Interesting facts about Marc Lottering
Marc Lottering has been making South Africa laugh for 20 years. The renowned comedian, who hails from Cape Town, is undoubtedly one of the country’s most loved personalities.
If you haven’t had a chance to see any of his stand-up comedy in real life, don’t worry, we’ve got you! Showmax is now streaming Marc’s stand-up comedy show Marc Lottering Live at Lyric Theatre. While you get ready for some good laughs, find out more about Marc’s background, weaknesses and, of course, his hair.
His entertainment career began in musicals
Before his days as a funny man, Marc also had a thing for musicals. When asked how his journey in the industry started, he revealed to the Mail and Guardian: “I’ve always been drawn to the entertainment business and started to audition for musicals around 1995. I appeared in four or so shows until 1998 when I did my first solo comedy show.”
Marc also told the publication that the title “comedian” didn’t cross his mind until he turned 30.
He’s very sensitive
In the age of social media, fans have instant access to their favourite celebrities. But this is not always a good thing as it sometimes comes with a lot of negativity.
Speaking on the topic of social media with Gareth Cliff on CliffCentral, Marc said: “I have a problem that I’m going to live with for the rest of my life, and that’s sensitivity. I’m very, very, very sensitive. And I try to rise above it, but I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I will never rise above that, that’s my thing, that’s my problem. I’m very sensitive.”
He also added that when he started in the business, a director told him that he must make a decision – he’s either going to read what people say about him and be tough about it, or not read what they say if he wouldn’t be able to handle it. “So, in 12 years I’ve never read a single review. Not one single review on any of my stuff,” he told Gareth back in 2015.
Yes, that’s his real hair
If you’ve been wondering whether the comedian’s hair is real or not, well, the answer is yes. In an interview on Trending SA, Marc joked that he’s had his big hair for 300 years. He also explained that there was a time when he chopped it off. “One year I was crazy enough – it was for a good cause – but I was asked to take it all off, and I will never do that again.”
He described having “normal” hair as traumatic because he now had to queue like everybody else. “And it was the worst few months of my life. Nobody recognised me. [At] restaurants I had to feel like a normal person; when it was full they would say ‘sorry’ and I hated that. So, I couldn’t wait to get the hair back,” he said.
“There’s a lot of power in hair. People talk about hair immediately, whether you have hair, whether you don’t have hair. People have very interesting things to say about hair and particularly in South Africa. So, it’s a powerful tool, so I think I’ll hang onto it for a while.”
Showmax now brings you Marc’s stand-up comedy from his live show at the Lyric Theatre. Enjoy!
