Josh Hutcherson stars in hit sci-fi comedy Future Man
• Future Man is now first and only on Showmax in Africa
• Starring MTV, Teen Choice and People’s Choice winner Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games)
• From the creators of Sausage Party & Misfits, and the directors of This Is The End
• 82% critics rating / 88% audience score, Rotten Tomatoes
• Best New Media Superhero Series nominee, 2018 Saturn Awards
• Renewed by Hulu; second season due early 2019
In Future Man, MTV, Teen Choice and People’s Choice winner Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) stars as Josh Futturman, a janitor whose only claim to fame is his skill at Biotic Wars, a dystopian video game so difficult that everyone else has given up.
When he finally beats the game, its two main characters, Tiger (Eliza Coupe from Happy Endings) and Wolf (Derek Wilson from Preacher), arrive from the future and explain that the video game is not just an accurate portrait of what’s to come but also a recruitment video. As the first and only player to finish the game, they believe Josh is the only person who can prevent the extinction of the human race. But some heroes are born; others are chosen… by mistake.
What follows is a time-traveling fish-out-of-water comedy, where Josh is as hopelessly unprepared to be a military hero as Tiger and Wolf are to blend into any era that values human life.
“Aren’t people playing video games supposed to embody the skills of their online personas?” asks a clearly frustrated Tiger in the first episode.
“No,” Josh replies. “It’s the complete opposite.”
Future Man has an 82% critics score and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics’ consensus saying, “Future Man’s nostalgia-driven premise is elevated by the cast’s compelling chemistry and a sense of humour just dumb enough to lighten the sci-fi load.”
Emmy winner Keith David (Community), Oscar nominee Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense, but now all grown up with a wild beard) and Britt Lower (Casual) co-star as Josh’s co-workers at a lab trying to develop a cure for herpes. Golden Globe nominee Ed Begley Jr (Ghostbusters) and Emmy nominee Glenne Headly (The Night Of), who sadly passed away in June 2017, play Josh’s parents.
The New York Times called Future Man a “soft-hearted, foul-mouthed, highly self-aware science-fiction spoof that glories in pop-culture plagiarism;” Forbes labeled it “an insane, tongue-in-cheek 80s homage;” and USA Today called it “a bawdy good time.”
Future Man was created by Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir, co-writers of Sausage Party, with Howard Overman, creator of the cult BAFTA-winning British science fiction series Misfits. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (This Is The End, Preacher) direct the pilot and two other episodes; other directors include Emmy nominees Craig Zisk (Weeds), Michael Weaver (Californication), Nisha Ganatra (Transparent), Millicent Shelton (30 Rock) and Wendey Stanzler (Parks and Recreation).
Hulu renewed Future Man for a second season, expected in early 2019 – a no-brainer considering the comedy was nominated as Best New Media Superhero Series by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films’ 2018 Saturn Awards and by the Art Directors Guild for a production design award.
