kykNET goes global with Showmax
South Africans living abroad have a new way to get a taste of home as kykNET expands its footprint, using the Showmax video on demand platform to supply content to Afrikaans speakers in key countries across the globe
10 December 2015
kykNET, in conjunction with the subscription video on demand service Showmax, is expanding its footprint. The new kykNET International service is now live and available to South African audiences in selected countries in North America, Europe and Australasia via the Showmax platform. With around 13 000 episodes of TV shows and movies, kykNET International launches with almost 6 000 hours of Afrikaans language programming.
Viewers in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand will be able to log on to www.showmax.com and for US$ 8.99 per month have unlimited access to classic favourites such as Molly en Wors, Song vir Katryn, Vallei van Sluiers and Plek van die Vleisvreters as well as the latest episodes of Kwela, Binnelanders, Villa Rosa and Robinson. Importantly, the platform will have new content within 24 hours of it airing in South Africa.
Speaking about global expansion, Jeanne van Zyl, Head of kykNET International said:
“There are vast numbers of Afrikaans speakers who live outside Africa and still want to keep in touch with their culture and language. kykNET International now makes this easy to do using the Showmax platform.
“TV shows and movies are a great way to keep the Afrikaans link alive and help make sure that the young and old alike don’t lose contact with their roots. As an example, it’s a great way to immerse children in a world that they may not have experienced directly or are too young to remember.
“Because we’re adding content within 24 hours of it airing in South Africa, it also means that being away from home doesn’t mean being out of date.”
Showmax can be accessed via dedicated smart TV apps, via web browser on laptop and desktop computers, and using Android and iOS apps for tablets and smartphones. With a single subscription, two different shows can be watched on separate devices simultaneously.
Karen Meiring, Director: Afrikaans Channels for M-Net said:
“No matter where South African expatriates end up on the globe, they remain fiercely loyal to, and supportive of, their heritage. We’re thrilled to be able to work with Showmax to help keep that link alive and deliver the best Afrikaans content, fresh from home, to fans across the globe.”
Interested customers can take advantage of Showmax’ risk-free seven-day trial. Once the sign-up process is complete and the customer’s PayPal details have been captured, billing will only take place once seven days have elapsed. There are no commitments and no catches. The user can cancel at any point during those first seven days and will not be billed.
