It was only during my adult years in university during a rainy weekend in Cape Town that I discovered the magic and beauty of JRR Tolkien’s epic The Lord of the Rings trilogy in the form of the films. It was love at first sight, as I watched Gandalf arrive at The Shire in The Fellowship of the Ring, shed tears riddled with deep feeling at Samwise Gamgee’s moving speech in The Two Towers, and gained compassionate, empathetic understanding for Gollum as parts of his tragic story were revealed as the story progressed.
