Welcome to 2018: drama is served
Update: For all the latest series on Showmax, browse the catalogue here »
Drum rolls to 2018 please. For a moment, forget all the anxiety that the New Year brings, forget even the painful reality that you spent your January salary in December and the Njaanuary memes that are flooding your timeline. Instead, focus on the positive things, like keeping your very attainable New Year’s resolutions (it’s not a competition, alright) and all the fantastic new TV series that you absolutely have to escape into this month. In a word, keep 2018 as lit as possible. (Are we still allowed to use juvenile words like lit this year?)
As we navigate through the special 62-day month of January, Showmax is serving a fresh line-up to kick off the year. Drama does not get hotter than this.
1. Fargo, Seasons 1-3
Fresh from winning his first Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Limited Series, Ewan McGregor impresses in his double role as brothers Emmit and Ray Stussy. While Emmit is financially successful and living the life as the Parking Lot King of Minnesota, Ray is a loser parole officer who feels his brother cheated him out of his inheritance. This petty sibling rivalry soon triggers a series of murders. Fargo Seasons 1 to 3 are now available for streaming on Showmax. Watch now »
The original 1996 Coen Brothers movie starring Shameless star William H Macy and Boardwalk Empire’s Steve Buscemi is also available for streaming on Showmax. Watch now »
2. HBO’s The Deuce: FIRST on Showmax
The only thing better than James Franco parading his hot brother on the 2018 Golden Globes stage after winning Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for The Disaster Artist, is his dual performance in The Deuce. Franco plays very opposite identical twins Vincent and Frankie Martino, who start working for the mob. And then there is Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Candy, a force of nature who is determined to thrive in the filth of New York’s Times Square. HBO’s The Deuce S1-2 is now available for streaming on Showmax. Watch now »
3. Casual, Seasons 1-3
A dating app can only do so much when it comes to finding the perfect match, a reality that Alex Cole (Tommy Dewey), the creator of dating app Snooger seems to battle with as he takes in his equally unlucky-in-love sister Valerie (Michaela Watkins, who you’ll recognise from Grey’s Anatomy, Hung and Californication) and her daughter Laura (Tara Lynne Barr). Casual S1-3 is now available for streaming on Showmax. Watch now »
4. The Magicians, Seasons 1-3
Saved from a tragic end in the previous season, the young magicians are now trapped in the fantasy world of Fillory as they search for another way to kill the Beast after their first failed attempt. The Magicians S1-3 are now available for streaming on Showmax. Watch now »
A few of my favourite things to look forward to in 2018
- Praise be, The Handmaid’s Tale, the most chilling drama of 2017 and multiple Emmy and Golden Globe winner, is now on Showmax!
- The premiere of Billions S3 in March. One word: epic. Billions S1-2 is now available for bingeing on Showmax.
- Younger S5! We finally get to find out if Team Charles is happening or not. Younger S1-t is only available for streaming on Showmax.
Something I am not pleased about
For those of us who were holding onto the little hope that maybe the final season of Game of Thrones would be released in 2018, bad news: it’s only coming in 2019. As we wait, send a raven, Game of Thrones S1-7 is available for streaming on Showmax.
Happy 2018, folks! Here’s to a fresh dose of drama on Showmax and a lot of shameless bingeing.
