Judging Matters S1-2

Judging Matters is a reality show that shows real people getting the justice they deserve in court. Episodes come to Showmax on Mondays, straight after they air on Africa Magic Showcase.

The show, which is produced in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, takes place in small claims court in Lagos. Minor cases in Lagos present a huge challenge for the established courts to deal with, often resulting in these cases dragging on and on.

Nigerians embark on civil suits over small disputes without proper understanding and guidance, often note even aware that a small claims court exists, which leads to discouragement, frustration and a feeling of systematic alienation.

Judging Matter is entertaining, but it’s also a useful source of education and information about the Lagos State Justice system.

Meet the judge and counsellor

The judge who will be tasked with handling these cases is Justice Olusola Williams: a retired judge in Lagos State. Her role is to listen and probe where required while the counsellor brings out the finer points of the case to enable her to make a final decision.

The counsellor in Judging Matters is Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, a compere, TV host and lawyer. With his understanding of the law and how to deal with some of the issues at stake, Ebuka is witty yet firm when presenting the cases.

Watch normal Lagosians embrace the law in Judging Matters on Showmax every Monday evening, straight after episodes air on Africa Magic Showcase.
