6 big-name signings we’ve already seen in the 2022 transfer window

Nothing makes a football fan more excited for a new football season than a big-name signing.

While it might be early in the transfer window, there have already been some grand signings to capture the imagination. Here’s a look at the players you’ll see playing at their new clubs live on Showmax Pro.

Erling Haaland – Dortmund to Manchester City

Eighty-six goals in 89 matches for Dortmund is a serious strike rate that has caught all of Europe’s attention. It was only a matter of time before one of the mega-rich clubs made a move for Erling Haaland.

Eventually, Manchester City made a deal that sees Erling follow in the footsteps of his father, Alf-Inge, who was at the club for three seasons.

While the lack of a centre forward has been well-documented as a possible Manchester City weakness, Pep Guardiola’s tactics aren’t suitable for out-and-out strikers like Haaland.

Will City have to change their game to fit in with Haaland’s play or vice versa?

Darwin Nunez – Benfica to Liverpool

With Diogo Jota joining the club two years ago and Luis Diaz arriving in January, Jurgen Klopp has prioritised bringing in a new generation of forwards with Darwin Nunez fitting into that vision.

The Uruguayan certainly looks like a prototype Klopp forward – quick, hard-working and with a desire to fight for attacking opportunities.

The 22-year-old was the top scorer in Portugal’s Primeira Liga last season when he was leading the line for Benfica. While he’s been bought with the future in mind, he’s bound to get more than enough opportunities in a Liverpool team that will be challenging in four different tournaments again.

Antonio Rudiger – Chelsea to Real Madrid

After a successful few seasons at Chelsea where he established himself at the heart of their defence, the German centre-back has joined Real Madrid, who are still looking for a solid replacement for Sergio Ramos.

Los Blancos will be looking to build on their excellent season where they won both LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League. Bringing in a new rock in defence could be the platform they need to propel the team into a period of consistent success.

Nemanja Matic – Manchester United to Roma

In a reunion with Jose Mourinho, the Serbian will start a new chapter of his career in Serie A at a Roma side looking to get back into UEFA Champions League contention.

Even though he became only a fringe player within the Manchester United setup, Matic has a proven track record as a holding midfielder and could be a quality signing.

With Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan both already settled at the club, could this be another case of a player deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford flourishing elsewhere?

Aurélien Tchouaméni – Monaco to Real Madrid

While young talented French players from Monaco will always be compared to Kylian Mbappe, LaLiga fans can be grateful that Aurélien Tchouaméni has not followed in his footsteps and has joined Real Madrid instead of PSG.

The young Frenchman will form part of Carlo Ancelotti’s ageing midfield where the likes of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro will be challenged by some younger competition.

As a big-money signing that has already imposed himself on the international stage, the expectation for Tchouaméni will be that he makes an impact in the first team immediately and not just in the future.

Ivan Perisic – Inter to Tottenham

It’s another player/manager reunion as the winger joins Antonio Conte at Spurs and it looks like a shrewd piece of business for a club that’s looking for proven performers to compete in the UEFA Champions League.

As one of the star performers in a Croatian team that reached the World Cup final in 2018 and a stalwart in an Inter Milan team that won the Scudetto, Perisic could be the extra support up front to Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min.

The transfer window usually picks up nearer to the end of July. If this is the quality of business that’s happening in June, then we should be in for some serious blockbuster signings that could set the 2022/23 season alight.
