Break out the bubbly! The Bold Type is back with a new season on Showmax
Created by writer-producer Sarah Watson (Parenthood) and inspired by the life of former Cosmopolitan editor Joanna Coles, The Bold Type has a 95% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 8/10 score on IMDb.
The series follows three ambitious young women – Jane (Katie Stevens), Kat (Aisha Dee), and Sutton (Meghann Fahy) – navigating their careers at the global New York women’s magazine Scarlet, while trying to figure out life, love, and who they are. It’s big on girl-power, even bigger on real friends, and totally more-ish.
New faces this season include former The Cosby Show child star Raven-Symoné (That’s So Raven, Black-ish) as beauty influencer Alice Knight; Tom Austen (Misfits, Grantchester) as bartender Cody; and Alex Paxton-Beesley (Copper) as conservative lawyer Eva Rhodesa.
“Feminist, progressive, positive” – and frothy
Glamour calls The Bold Type “one of the most delightful shows on TV;” AV Club says it’s “a heart-on-its-sleeve, good-for-you affair that’s also a glossy, giddy comic workplace drama;” and Mashable describes it as “millennial utopia,” saying it’s “feminist, progressive, positive, all packaged with a frothy style.”
The Bold Type has been nominated for seven Teen Choice Awards, including three for Best Summer TV Show, two Best TV Actor noms for Aisha Dee, and one each for Meghann Fahy and Katie Stevens. It’s also nabbed nominations for the GLAAD, Imagen and Satellite awards.
Pee tests, breast checks, a ring and a new office are just some of what’s in store for the girls in Season 4.
Kat’s freewheeling love life leads her into dodgy political territory this season, distracting her just when she ought to be watching her step at work. There are exciting developments on the work front for Jane, but a visit to the doctor brings seriously bad news. Meanwhile – surprise! – Richard is back, and Sutton’s relationship is about to go next level in ways she may not be prepared for.
The season opens with a shocker about Jacqueline’s position and Scarlet’s future, pitching us straight into a season of changes and challenges for the ladies, as life throws them a series of curve balls they’ll need the bestest of besties to get through. Luckily, friendship is the one rock-solid thing they count on in the tough times ahead.
As The New Yorker says, The Bold Type is “a show to warm a jaded heart.” And we could all use some warmth right now.
