Four Weddings And A Funeral S1

The dramedy series Four Weddings And A Funeral shares a name and theme with the 1994 British rom-com movie but they’re worlds apart. That’s thanks to creator/writer Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project), who gave the 2019 miniseries a contemporary feel. Plus the main characters are American instead of British.

It doesn’t matter if you haven’t watched the film (stream it on Showmax here), the show is as fun on its own with the same formula (a group of friends see love and drama unite them or tear them apart) and there’s laughter mixed with tender moments.

The only main cast member you’ll recognise is Nathalie Emmanuel (lead character Maya) – she played Missandei in Game Of Thrones. Everyone else is a newcomer or unknown. And yes, that is a cameo by Andie MacDowell from the movie, but she’s not reprising her character since the two are separate productions.

Four Weddings won’t win awards, but the ten 44-minute episodes do their job well as a light drama. Maria Fontoura from rollingstone.com agrees: “The main thing the show lacks is the frisson of a cast that clicks as though they were real. What it offers instead is something much closer to Kaling’s sweet spot: a comforting and predictable … sitcom.”
