Stream these SAFTA winners now on Showmax
- iNumber Number, Showmax’s co-production with Mzansi Magic, won Best Directing: TV Drama
- Edik van Nantes won Best Variety and Magazine Show
Showmax got off to a winning start at the SAFTAs when their first ever entry, iNumber Number, took home the TV Drama Golden Horn for Best Achievement in Directing for Catherine Cooke, Rolie Nikiwe and Rea Rangaka.
This co-production with Mzansi Magic is a spin-off from Donovan Marsh’s SAFTA-winning film of the same name. Presley Chweneyagae and Sdumo Mtshali reprise their roles as cops Shoes and Chilli. Chilli infiltrates an infamous crime family to bring down an untouchable patriarch, while criminals are trying to intimidate Shoes into withholding evidence. When these cases collide, the cops find themselves at a crossroads where their brotherhood bond will be tested.
“Congratulations to Quizzical Pictures and Catherine, Rolie and Rea,” says Candice Fangueiro, head of content: Africa at Showmax. “Showmax has the most local content of any streaming service in South Africa, so it’s a key differentiator for us, and we couldn’t have asked for a better to start to our Originals between our first SAFTA for iNumber Number and our record-breaking numbers on Tali’s Wedding Diary. Co-productions like iNumber Number with Mzansi Magic and Waterfront with kykNET are working well for us and we’ll definitely be doing more this year, starting with The Comedy Central Roast of Somizi.”
Edik van Nantes, another show only available to stream on Showmax, won Best Variety and Magazine Show. The series follows Nataniel to France, where he puts the food, the culture and the people to the test in his distinctive laid-back yet elegant style.
Schalk Bezuidenhout won Best Supporting Actor – TV Comedy for Hotel on Saturday. Showmax has the first season of this Afrikaans mockumentary about a struggling Mpumalanga hotel.
Showmax also has three seasons of both Republiek van Zoid Afrika, which won Best Talk Show, and Isibaya, which won TV Soap, Directing, Supporting Actor (Pallance Dladla), Best Wardrobe, Hair and Make-Up and Art/Production Design. In addition, Showmax has the first season of Die Boekklub, which won Best Supporting Actress (Jana Cilliers) and Wardrobe/Costume Design in the TV Drama category.
“We also want to congratulate Ari Kruger on winning the Editing in a TV Comedy Award for Suzelle DIY,” says Candice. “Ari directed Tali’s Wedding Diary, the first Showmax Original, which had four times as many first-day views as season seven of Game of Thrones on Showmax. We love his sense of humour and are delighted he’s getting the recognition he deserves.”
