We can’t get enough of the music in Younger S5

A good show deserves even greater music, and we the fans will not accept anything less. If you are a fan of Younger (I don’t know what you are waiting for if you are not), then you must know that the series’ soundtrack does justice to the show, whether it’s giving us the upbeat tempo that goes well with the colours of New York skyline or the haunting mellow songs that plays over the show’s most intense moments. From staple artists like Ruelle, to new age pop stars like former Fifth Harmony member Camilla Cabello, to some indie names you’ve never even heard of, Younger’s soundtrack – just like its storyline – will break your heart, heal you in the process and even make you fall in love.

Episode 1: Liza Too

This episode ties in to the #MeToo movement and Harvey Weinstein-y kind of plotline, and exposes Empirical’s elite author Edward LL Moore, who’s accumulated a string of sexual misconducts in his career. To fight back, Moore exposes Liza (to Charles) as a fraud to discredit her credibility as one of his victims.

We really like: Ruelle’s haunting voice as she plays Hold Your Breath above Charles’s shock the moment he learns the truth about Liza. Here is a fun fact about Ruelle: her music has been featured on other TV shows, too, including Cloak and Dagger, Pretty Little Liars, Revenge, Teen Wolf, The Vampire Diaries and many more.

Episode 2: A Titanic Problem

Reeling from the revelation that Liza is not as young as she’s made everyone believe, Charles tries his best to avoid Liza while also giving his estranged wife Pauline a painful reality check.

We really like: Havana by Camilla Cabello featuring Young Thug, and Out Of My Head by indie group Loud Forest, which really adds the mood to that last scene where Charles shakes Liza with that one liner, “You really pulled this off.”

Episode 3: The End of the Tour

A sad and hurting Charles (Liza did this) still can’t seem to forgive Liza for what she did and finally decides to confront her about her lie.

We really like: The sweet emo sound of Artificial Heart by Opus Orange that plays as Charles confronts Liza.

Episode 4: The Talented Mr Ridley

Because Younger is still trying to play with our emotions when it comes to Charles and Liza, Liza meets a potential suitor (rolls eyes), a washed-up author named Don Ridley who goes to parties to steal pork chops.

We really like: Dancing in the Rain by Cela that plays when Diana holds a party at her house – it really gives off a “put your dancing shoes” vibe.

Episode 5: Big Little Liza

Liza’s real age takes centre stage again as her opportunistic author friend Don tries to take advantage of her secret to revive his career.

We really like: The anthematic vibe that I Choose Me by Anna Dellaria and Express Yourself by The Highfields give off in this episode – if you are looking for go-to songs to lift your spirit, you are in the right place.

Episode 6: Sex, Liza and Rock and Roll

Even though they are still not on good terms, Liza rescues Charles from a lustful rock star author who won’t let go of her book that easily.

We really like: James Droll really sets the mood here with Wall as Liza and Charles stand on opposite sides of the door longing for each other but being too scared/proud to do anything about it.

Episode 7: A Christmas Miracle

Charles gets a chance to see Liza’s other life as she performs a Christmas tradition – a hilarious Sound of Music yodelling – with her daughter and ex-husband. In a narrator’s voice: And at that moment, Charles knew that he still loved Liza despite her betrayal. Charles, who had been brooding the whole season, was smiling again.

We really like: Perhaps it’s because it’s the Christmas episode or “The One that Charles forgives Liza” but this episode features some mellow favourites like Wake Up by Rupert Pope and Giles Palmer, and Kenny G’s Christmas special Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

Episode 8: The Bubble

Love is in the air, Charles and Liza finally can’t get enough of each other as they engage in some intense secret romance.

We really like: Camilla Cabello kicks off Charles and Liza’s intense romance with her 2018 hit Never Be the Same.

Episode 9: Honk if You’re Horny

Liza and Charles’s bubble is broken when Kelsey finds out about them, almost jeopardising Liza’s and Kelsey’s friendship. Also, Kenzo’s randy past comes to light but Diana Trout is too mature to let the past ruin what they have.

We really like: Just Like One by Cake Without Candles and Brittany Pfantz will give you that groovy feeling that has you bopping like a fool.

Episode 10: Girls on the Side

Liza gets a taste of her own medicine when her daughter introduces her boyfriend, a professor at her campus, while Josh bares his heart to Liza after learning that she’s been sneaking around with Charles, and a new author sets her eyes on Charles. Poor Josh. Poor Liza.

We really like: Pale Honey’s Why Do I Feel This Way that plays as Liza takes a stand by telling Charles she doen’t want to keep their relationship a secret anymore.

Episode 11: Fraudlein

Things get a little heated (as others get drunk and wasted) in Frankfurt as Liza meets an “old enemy” who offers her a job that could make her life easier.

We really like: The sisterly vibes that Stand Together by Jingle Punks gives off as Liza and Kelsey embrace after Liza reveals that’s she’s accepted another job.

Episode 12: Lizability

The #MeToo movement comes knocking on Charles’ door once again: this time it’s his secret relationship with Liza that is on the line, so he takes a bold move and steps down before things get any uglier.

We really like: Fallingwater by Maggie Rogers that plays as Charles tells Liza he’s now truly happy after relinquishing his position at Empirical as this means they can now be together, freely.
