Super-story time: The best moments in S1-6 of the fan-fave comedy
Cloud 9 is the name of the superstore where Amy and co are causing trouble just trying to do their jobs on the shop floor in hit comedy series Superstore.
They’re not the sharpest tools in the shed (or shop), they’ve got more personal problems than most celebs, and they’re downright hilarious. Here are some of our favourite episodes from each season.
Jonah’s whale of a mistake: S1 episode 1
Newbie employee Jonah (Ben Feldman) arrives for his first day keen to impress. While trying to hide the fact that he’s a college dropout, he lies about knowing what he’s doing on the store floor. And to prove his prowess, Jonah takes the pricing gun and starts adding discount prices to the products on shelves.
Shame, if he’d paid more attention in his maths classes he’d have noticed that instead of a 25% discount on goods, he was slashing them all the way down to just 25c – even the really foncy-foncy and expensive goods. Thankfully Amy (America Ferrera) is on hand to fix things… and snag forlorn Jonah’s heart, hook, line and sinker.
Bo-Chey get hitched: S2 episode 21
Shame, they’re totes adorbs as a couple, but Bo Derek Thompson (Johnny Pemberton) and Cheyenne Lee (Nichole Sakura) need a little help. They’ve been engaged since episode 1, when wannabe rapper Bo popped the magical Q to his lady love with an $8 ring he bought in the store after getting Cheyenne knocked up.
They’re your stereotypical pregnant teen couple who’ve got very little going for themselves other than their undying love for each other, but that means a lot – especially to their work friends who make their wedding all that much more special by attending in their Sunday best. Their ceremony is finished off with a little dancin’, a little groovin’, a little Bo rappin’… and loads of fun at the reception. Keep an eye on bridesmaid Dina (Lauren Ash) – she’s getting broody from all the love going around and someone’s gonna get a face full of Dina delight!
Dina’s baby surprise: S3 episode 10
Store assistant manager Dina doesn’t exactly ooze maternal instinct. She’s rude, she’s crude, she’s lewd – she shouldn’t even legally be allowed to babysit. But all this makes her perfect as a surrogate for store manager Glenn (Mark McKinney) and his wife Jerusha (not seen), who can’t fall pregnant. It’s one thing to cover for a friend who’s bunking work, but Dinah brushes off nine months of physical discomfort like water off a duck’s back because she’s already trying to see how much she can grab from the situation.
But it’s not just the fact that Dina is kind enough to be a surrogate and carry the baby that makes this a fun episode, it’s that we know how OTT she’s going to become – especially when those pregnancy hormones kick in. She’s going to be more demanding, more diva-ish, more EVERYTHING! And considering how crazy Dina already is, expect nothing short of dah-rah-mah until she pops!
The L Word: S4 episode 13
You could cut Jonah and Amy’s sexual chemistry and tension like a wedding cake! After four seasons of skirting around it and dancing circles around each other, the pair do what all secret crushes do: they argue! And they do it in style – in the middle of the Cloud 9 Valentine’s Day display!
Cue insults being hurled, fingers pointed, accusations levelled… and both saying “I love you” for the first time. Awwwww shucks – that’s so cute, we’re vomiting rainbows! But we don’t care because they actually need to admit their attraction and just kiss and hook up. Love is tough and no one wants to be alone on V-day.
Care for yourself… and me: S5 episode 5
Mental health was heavily disregarded pre-Covid as being all that important. So it’s surprising that there’s an episode dedicated to caring for one’s mind and heart over the physical body. But when you’re dealing with the brains of Cheyenne, Bo, Jonah and co… yeah, well… it’s not going to end well. It all starts with Amy falling asleep on the job and her colleagues realising that she – and they – need to take better care of themselves.
It’s not just laughs, through – there are two heartfelt important moments. Dina discovers that she has diabetes and needs to overhaul her lifestyle to get her condition under control (because it’s a silent killer that flies under the radar in the real world, too). And undocumented immigrant and nice-guy Matteo (Nico Santos) becomes a life coach for the Cloud 9 optometrist, who needs a mental boost and someone pushing him to do better.
Help us help you: S6 episode 12
No one likes company surveys or training for customer situations that may arise. But you know what? You’re gonna love these because store manager Glenn is off his rocker and comes up with some of the craziest scenarios. How else is he going to train his motley staff members to deal with unexpected situations and difficult customers?
But it’s only when ex-con warehouse worker Marcus (Jon Barinholtz) gets involved that the trouble really kicks off. A “there’s a clogged toilet” doesn’t stay hypothetical – Marcus grabs salami sticks by the dozen, shoves them down the loo and genuinely floods the store, leaving Glenn to lie on the floor across the door and try to stop water flowing onto the shop floor.
Honourable mention: Anytime that Garrett (Colton Dunn) wheels himself behind the store microphone – his snarky one-liners and quips are genius.
