4 #TBT action heroes on Showmax
Nothing beats the classics, especially when it comes to action movies that feature our all-time favourite heroes, masters of fist fights, wreaking havoc and slow-mo walks from explosions. I’m talking about veteran heroes like Jean Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagal, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and maybe Nicolas Cage. Just maybe.
Let’s take a swagger down memory lane with these action classics served up by Showmax.
One of the best action heroes of the late 80s and the 90s, Jean Claude Van Damme crafted an explosive niche in action movies, literally. In Six Bullets, Van Damme now retired from combat, teams up with a mixed martial artist to fight a dangerous mob and bring justice to all their victims. Van Damme may be old here, but he still lives up to his reputation as the man never to mess with.
Another movie featuring Van Damme, Pound of Flesh is also available for streaming on Showmax.
Who can forget Steven Seagal (some of you might still be pronouncing his name wrong after all this time), always the man of the moment, kicking butt and saving lives with that reluctant side smile of his. He’s back at it again in Maximum Conviction, working against time to stop a mercenary and his gang who have taken a military prison hostage. In this one, Seagal teams up with WWE retired wrestler Steve Austin.
Also catch Seagal in the not-so-old action thriller Code of Honour.
Just like his 90s action counterpart Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren was a darling off the screen and with the ladies he saved on-screen as well. In Black Jack, Lundgren is a former US Marshall who protects high profile clients. Things get more dangerous when he has to protect a young woman from an obsessed killer despite his problematic eyesight.
Some people may not know this but Suits’ and Grey’s Anatomy’s actor Eric Roberts was once a martial artist in the Best of the Best franchise. Roberts plays Alex Grady, a retired fighter who is chosen to represent America in a martial arts tournament against a very tough and adequately prepared Team Korea.
More in the Showmax catalogue: Best of the Best 2, Best of the Best 3: No Turning Back, Best of the Best 4: Without Warning.
More action movies with butt-kicking heroes on Showmax: Red (Bruce Willis), The Art of War (Wesley Snipes), Next (Nicolas Cage), Basic (John Travolta and Wesley Snipes) and Collateral (Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx).
Closer to home, don’t miss the original Kenyan movie Ni Sisi, starring Kenya’s own veteran actor Peter King.
