Breathe Umphefumlo (2014)
In this musical, a group of struggling students is made to face their reality in the most tragic way: when they lose one of their friends to TB. The movie is a retelling of the classic story of Puccini’s Opera La Boheme, and is directed by Mark Donford-May, who was also responsible for the retelling of Carmen in U-Carmen eKhayelitsha, also currently on Showmax.
Puccini’s classic score is transformed by marimba and kettle drums and is sung in isiXhosa, and the story is transposed to the township of Khayelitsha in Cape Town.
