Rick is a sociopathic genius scientist and Morty his inherently timid grandson. Together, they go on insanely dangerous adventures across the universe, documented in this Emmy-award winning half-hour animated comedy series from Adult Swim.

Now Season 5 is here, and Rick Sanchez is back, along with his daughter Beth, his son-in-law Jerry, granddaughter Summer, and, of course, Morty.

Rick and Morty won its second Outstanding Animated Program Emmy in three years in 2020 and is currently the 13th highest rated series of all-time on IMDb, with a 9.2/10 rating from nearly 400 000 fans. That makes Rick and Morty the second highest-rated animated series of all time, behind only Avatar: The Last Airbender. It’s one of the most-binged series on Showmax, with all previous seasons available to stream.

One of the creators, Justin Roiland, says, “On any given day you’ll feel like Rick and Morty can go for 20, 30 seasons. We have characters that don’t really age; it’s very Simpsons-esque.”

Co-creator Dan Harmon says, “Every single season there’s a little bit of anxiety: Now what’s our definition of having fun and being good? Are we going to continue to be difficult on ourselves because that seems to be an ingredient in the quality? It’s our job to relax and be happy because that’s another huge ingredient … I think that happens on every show, but it’s weird when your job is to continue churning out something that you are proud of for its scarcity. Every season you feel like your job is never the same.”

Critics have always praised the intricate plot lines and world-building of Rick & Morty, with Vulture saying, “It has transformed into not only one of the sharpest, most surreal, nerdy comedies on television, but also a treatise on storytelling and world-building.”
