The Insecure S4 finale hit us in the feels

** Warning – spoilers! If you haven’t caught up on the latest episodes of Insecure, stream them here.

What a ride!

Earlier in the week, the Season 4 finale of Insecure aired, leaving us with perhaps the most melancholic moments on the show yet.

With all four seasons now available to binge-watch on Showmax, Insecure has never shied away from giving us the good with the bad, and this sentiment was perfectly capped with Molly (Yvonne Orji) and Issa’s (Issa Rae) meeting where they each admitted to being happy about the other showing up, against the backdrop of Lawrence’s (Jay Ellis) pregnancy bombshell. Talk about a bittersweet ending!

From messy to Miss Got It Together

After years of Issa’s “messy behaviour”, to quote Molly, we finally got to see Miss Dee become her own woman this season with the success of her block party. In her private life, we saw her mend fences with her mother, and finally work things out with Lawrence.

With Molly, we saw her finally get what she’s wanted for a long time – a man of her own, not to mention the fact that she’s still killing it at work. However as the ladies revel in their respective wins, we see them drift further apart. But with stormy days ahead – Molly is at a crossroads with Andrew (Alexander Hodge) and news of Condola’s (Christina Elmore) pregnancy was a huge bombshell – we see the ladies gravitate towards each other again. This begs the question: are Issa and Molly only good for each other in bad times?

In the spirit of keeping things real, we also see the show tackle postpartum depression with the disappearance of Tiffany (Amanda Seales). In the latest episode of the behind the scenes show Insecure: Wine Down With Issa Rae, Issa discusses the importance of tackling such a sensitive, real-life issue.

“We wanted to depict this because it’s commonplace and we wanted to showcase this struggle.”

She also points out that Tiffany’s disappearance is a metaphor for her actual friends missing out on each other’s lives and not noticing that their friend is falling apart. Seales elaborates on this by pointing out that despite the fact that her character is the strong one who always seems to have it all together, she has slowly been losing grip on herself all season. This is something that happens very often in real life – the strongest ones aren’t always the happiest.

So close, so close!

Then, there’s Issa and Lawrence who, after doing a song and dance all season, finally decided to give their relationship another shot, only to be blindsided by news of Condola’s pregnancy. Will their relationship survive this new test?

“This taints him in a very real way. If I’m interested in a man and he has a child with another person, it robs you of that moment. They’ve lost a milestone,” Issa further shares on Insecure: Wine Down With Issa Rae.

Indeed the folks at Insecure have had quite the ride this season and with each of the characters at major crossroads in their lives, things are about to get even more real next season. The show has already been renewed by HBO, so we’re counting down the days til we can stream it!
