The Wife actor Lindah Majola shares his Showmax watchlist

Breakout star Lindah Majola won the hearts of many viewers when he made his acting debut on Showmax Original telenovela The Wife. Widely known for his viral skits on social media, Lindah plays the role of Langa, Hlomu’s flamboyant and outspoken twin brother.

The TikTok sensation told us what he’s currently watching on Showmax and why he loves these titles so much. You can watch them all in the Lindah Majola collection on Showmax.

I May Destroy You

This is a story about bravery, wokeness and understanding

What I appreciate about I May Destroy you is that it first has a comedic approach with its witty dialogue. But as we delve deeper into the storyline I became intrigued by the issues they address – the storyline unpacks trauma caused by sexual assault with a bit of dark humour.

When you are watching the show, there are moments of discomfort because you realise that there are things that we as humans do to each other that can cause a lot of damage. But in the same breath, this is a story about bravery, wokeness, and about understanding that there are things that we do that might make other people unsettled in who they are.

Creator Michaela Coel stars in this brave and provocative HBO limited series as a self-confident young author with a group of friends, a boyfriend in Italy, and a burgeoning writing career. But when her drink is spiked with a date-rape drug, she must question and rebuild every element of her life.

This is the second series where Coel wears many hats including creator, executive producer, writer, and series star. She won her first Emmy for this critically acclaimed HBO series and made history by becoming the first Black woman to win an Emmy for writing for a limited series.

Insecure S1-5

It’s a beautiful show about Black culture

I love comedy but I especially appreciate comedies that help with problem-solving and attend to issues we are going through right now, from mental health issues and relationships to family dynamics. I think Insecure does exactly that, and it’s also a beautiful story about Black culture.

I just love how the Black characters are written in this storyline, whether they are heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual it does not matter. Insecure highlights friends navigating through life and the male characters are written very well in the show. I love that it’s the epitome of Black representation.

Rotten Tomatoes hailed the series as “an insightful, raunchy, and hilarious journey through the life of a twenty-something black woman that cuts through stereotypes with sharp wit and an effusive spirit.” Season 5 currently has a 100% critics’ rating, while the show’s 2021 accolades include Image Awards wins for Best Comedy and Best Actress (Issa Rae), not to mention Critics Choice and MTV nominations for Best Actress and a Satellite Awards nomination for Best TV Series.

Showmax also has Insecure: The End, a heartfelt documentary that bids farewell to its fans. The documentary consists of interviews with Issa Rae, Jay Ellis, Yvonne Orji, and the rest of the cast and crew.

A Girl In The River: The Price Of Forgiveness

I can’t even put into words the impact that the documentary had on me

For me, this documentary is really about how vulnerable you can become when in love. You not only expose yourself to affection but also to harm and betrayal.

Saba is a young woman who did not care that the man she loves does not meet her family’s standards. She’s then shot and left for dead in a river because of the man she chose – when she recovers, Saba still wants to be with her lover.

I can’t even put into words the impact that the documentary had on me. We live in a patriarchal world, our doings do not come out of love but from what we’ve been conditioned to do. I think as humans it is important to base all that we do on love. That’s what resonated with me the most when it comes to this documentary.

A woman in Pakistan sentenced to death for falling in love becomes a rare survivor of the country’s harsh judicial system.

This Oscar-winning documentary film has a 94% score rating on Rotten Tomatoes and explores an attempted “honour” killing in Pakistan. Nineteen-year-old Saba, whose father and uncle are furious that she’s married a “lowly” man, is beaten, shot and left for dead in a nearby river.

Inxeba (The Wound)

Inxeba: The Wound is on Showmax

I just love that the film addresses topics that are uncomfortable

I appreciated the provocativeness of Inxeba and it came at a time when South Africans were very uncomfortable with addressing conversations about culture, homosexuality, coming into it, and really accepting yourself. The conversations surrounding this film came with controversy but at the end of the day, you have a story about forbidden love and a film about embracing one’s manhood.

But what is also interesting is that the manhood that is being celebrated is very fluid. We have a queer man who is visibly a bit more feminine than his peers and he falls in love with an alpha male. I just love the fact that the film is groundbreaking and addresses topics that are uncomfortable. It also pushes the narrative of queer roles.

While travelling to the mountains with a group of young initiates, Xolani’s life is turned upside down when his forbidden love is discovered.

When a defiant initiate from the city discovers his best-kept secret, Xolani’s entire existence begins to unravel.

Is’thunzi

Is'thunzi

It gets me emotional all the time

Is’thunzi is also a favourite. I recently watched it and I was drawn towards how the storyline speaks to the challenges and issues that Black girls go through in South Africa. Black women and children are the most vulnerable in our country.

You have a better chance of finding a man who’s going to fund your life than getting funding for university. I just feel like this show speaks about that, and seeing how these young girls become each other’s keeper is so commendable. Is’thunzi gets me emotional all the time.

A fierce group of high school girls pursue their dreams and form a bond that will not only push them over the edge, but also grow them in ways they never could have imagined.

They use sheer grit and resourcefulness to fight suppressive power, gender dynamics and superstition. Thuso Mbedu was nominated for Best Performance by an actress at the 45th International Emmy Awards.

In addition to these stellar picks, which are all available to stream in the Lindah Majola collection, you can also see Lindah in The Wife S1-2, only on Showmax. The Wife Season 3 landing on 10 November 2022.
