The Wife: Hlomu and Mqhele’s marriage reaches breaking point
Hlomu’s future hangs in the balance, and Nkosana delivers the devastating news of his son’s death to his son’s mother.
Update: Want to know more? Watch the behind-the-scenes special The Wife: Behind the Veil. Plus, binge all of Season 1 and 2 of The Wife on Showmax.
As we draw closer to the end of The Wife S1, episodes 27-30 give us a lot to digest and leave us with yet another hard-to-watch episode. Let’s get right into it.
Hlomu tries to cover up the Zulu brothers dirty secrets
Mqhele wants Hlomu to quit her job at the Informer, but she refuses and insists that being there means she can help protect and keep the blood on their hands, out of view. If she quits her job, someone else will take over the case and the Zulu brothers’ business could be exposed.
Meanwhile, Lux isn’t happy with Hlomu’s work. In her defense, she says there aren’t any big scoops and she is still unimpressed with Lux for writing about her wedding drama. The two get into a heated argument about how Hlomu hasn’t been doing her job.
When a story breaks about two murders in Mbuba which are linked to the Zulu brothers, Hlomu asks to cover it. Lux thinks she’s too close to the story, but he ends up taking it upon himself to follow through with the story, but without including Hlomu.
Nkosana breaks devastating news to Zandile
The investigation isn’t the only thing causing a rift in the Zulu brothers’ homestead. They also need to raise a lot of money to help release Nkosana’s wife, Zandile (played by Khanyi Mbau) from jail.
Nkosana finally visits Zandile in prison, and the first thing she tells him is that she dreamt of Mvelo, their son, “In the dream, he was dressed in white. He looked like you before you had a grey beard.” says Zandile. He tells her of their son’s passing and Zandile doesn’t take it well. He then promises that he will pull strings to get her out of jail very soon.
Hlomu’s excitement turns to terror
Hlomu has handed herself over to a life filled with misery. When Hlomu decides to go out to have fun with her friends, Mqhele is furious. Hlomu’s absence has everyone asking questions and this sends Mqhele into an emotional spiral.
After a night out, Hlomu wakes up the next morning feeling sick and she remembers that she had missed her period. She does a home pregnancy test and it confirms that she is pregnant. Just when we thought things were beginning to look up for Hlomu, worse things come tumbling down quickly. Before she could tell her husband this news, he beat her to a pulp.
One thing about Mqhele, he has a horrible way of dealing with pain, and every time he faces his traumas or does not see Hlomu next to him, he gets angry and turns her into a punching bag.
Viewers react after seeing yet another abusive moment from Mqhele, an aspect of his personality that always ends up in Hlomu’s sufferin. This begs the question, does he really love Hlomu as he says?
The nail in the coffin is that she could have a miscarriage following Mqhele’s beating. When she goes to consult a doctor, she gets the shock of her life to find that the person to attend her is her ex-boyfriend, Sandile.
