5 Showmax hacks to maximise your holiday viewing
Are you ready for a full Showmax experience? These hacks, tricks and tips are our gift to you.
The holiday season is a time to relax, to eat and drink your way through lazily-themed year-end parties and to watch way too much TV as you try to finish all your pending episodes before the year ends.
So, are you ready for a full Showmax experience? Here are the hacks, tricks and tips that will make your holiday viewing a real treat.
1. Connect up to 5 devices
In this day and age, no one should still be fighting for the remote because they want to watch their favourite series. I mean, c’mon, have you heard about streaming on Showmax that allows you to connect up to 5 devices on one account?
Two devices can be used at the same time, which means that you can stream The Bold Type on TV while your other (more blood-thirsty) half catches up on all five seasons of Vikings on his tablet in the bedroom.
2. Stream anywhere, anytime
It doesn’t matter where you are, streaming allows you to catch all your favourite episodes anywhere as long as you are connected to the internet.
Going home after a long day at work? Indulge in the guilty pleasure of Mistresses. Does your boss keep piling your desk with more paperwork? Find some me time to destress in the bathroom with a hilarious episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Can’t find a perfect plan on a Friday night? Snuggle up with some warm onesies, red wine and a thrilling episode of Big Little Lies. Show me a better date night, I’ll wait.
With Showmax, you can watch TV ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, and binge-watch at your own pleasure because waiting a whole week for the next episode of your favourite show is just too mainstream and basic.
So, data is the reason you can’t enjoy all your shows? There is always the option of taking advantage of a public Wi-Fi connection or the one at the office to download your favourite shows and movies on Showmax to watch offline later. Please note that with Showmax, you can download up to 25 series episodes or movies at a time that you can keep for 30 days.
Once you’ve started watching an episode that you’ve downloaded, you’ll have the next 48 hours to finish it.
We all know how busy the holiday season can be with families travelling from the city to the coast and going overseas. What better travel companion than episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale or whatever show you are into this December?
After all, who wants to be subjected to the mundane airplane movies when you can just watch the shows you downloaded earlier on Showmax while you’re in the air? Imagine that!
Even with all the attractive bundle offers we now have, data can be quite expensive, and we can’t all afford Wi-Fi at home, but that should never stop us from catching 2018’s sexiest man alive Idris Elba as the tortured, enigmatic DCI John Luther in the gritty crime drama Luther on Showmax.
With bandwidth capping, you get to control the amount of data you use when streaming your favourite shows and movies.
How to use bandwidth capping on your smartphone/tablet:
- Visit the Showmax app.
- Click Menu.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Bandwidth Capping.
- Here, you can choose between Low Capping at 0.3 GB per hour, Medium Capping at 0.7 GB per hour and No Capping which offers the highest quality at 3 GB per hour.
Using your computer
- Log on to Showmax.
- Select your favourite show or movie and click “Watch Now”.
- Click Settings and select Bandwidth Capping.
- Choose your preferred bandwidth capping option.
- From here you can relax and continue watching your favourite show or movie.
5. Add multiple Profiles (including Kids’ Profiles)
The kids are home for the holiday, and they come with an appetite for fun and curiosity that can somehow be quenched by a few episodes of Wizards of Waverly Place.
But what if their know-it-all, tech-savvy minds mean they bump into an episode of the racy Girlfriend Experience while scrolling through your Profile?
No need to panic, Showmax allows you to set up Kids’ Profiles so that the kids are only exposed to kiddie shows and movies with age-appropriate content that they can enjoy.
You can also add multiple Profiles depending on the users who are connected to your account so that the content everyone watches is tailored to their needs.
How to set up Kids’ Profiles on Showmax
- Log on to Showmax on your computer.
- Click Profile and select Manage Profiles from the drop-down menu.
- Click Add Profile.
- Enter the Profile name of your choice.
- Add a PIN if necessary.
- Choose the relevant age category for your kids from the menu: Adults, Teens, Older Kids and Younger Kids.
- Click Add Profile button again to confirm.
Other gratifying hacks*
Skipping intros – Unless you want to read the names of actors and producers or hum along to the show’s theme song, skipping intros is the best invention of this century, argue with me. But just putting it out there, if you skip intros to Game of Thrones, we can’t be friends because the devil is in the details. This option always pops up the moment a show starts.
Watch Now – Just imagine this, you finished watching a suspenseful episode of Power and then you have to wait through the end credits to see what happens in the next episode. With Showmax’s Watch Now option, you don’t have to, just click it and skip the rest of the end credits to move on to the next episode.
Turn subtitles on/off – People who automatically turn on their subtitles on shows and movies even when they can understand the language, who hurt you? That aside, Showmax allows you turn on your subtitles and turn them off whenever you feel like.
Enable or disable continuous play – I don’t think anyone would want to disable continuous play because it is so gratifying to just lay back and play back to back episodes without having to press anything, but if you’re not into that, you can simply change the setting.
Happy holidays, fellow streamers!
