What We Do in the Shadows S1
You know how when you live with someone for a while, they can really get on your nerves? Well, vampires Nandor the Relentless, Laszlo Cravensworth and Nadja have lived together for over a century and the cracks are starting to show. They’re joined by Guillermo, who’s hoping Nandor will one day make him a vampire, and Colin Robinson, an energy vampire who literally bores people to death.
The hilarious dark series is based on the 2015 mockumentary movie of the same name created by and starring talented Kiwis Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. It follows the vampires’ daily (or rather, nightly) lives.
The show is directed by Jemaine, who appeared in the original movie, and stars BAFTA winner Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry (you’ll recognise him from the IT Crowd) and relative newcomer Natasia Demetriou as the three vampires.
Also keep your eyes peeled for cameos from some of film and TV’s most iconic vampires, including Tilda Swinton (Only Lovers Left Alive), Evan Rachel Wood (True Blood) and Wesley Snipes (Blade).
Critics love the offbeat comedy of the show, with RogerEbert.com saying that it “actually gets a little funnier with each episode”; Slate saying that it “has more up its sleeve than just re-creating the vibe of the original”; and NPR writing that “the jokes [are] crisp and fast and funny, and the visual effects are employed just as effectively as in the movie, folded seamlessly into the handheld-camera aesthetic so they seem all the more uncanny.”
