Iconic TV characters to channel this Halloween

October 31 is here – time to watch out for those crazy and sometimes over-the-top Halloween party costumes on your social media feed. But Halloween has never been a Kenyan thing. One of our best qualities (other than our chronic forgetfulness) is that we are too superstitious to indulge in an event that glorifies the scary. Why someone would willingly choose to dress and paint their face as the undead is beyond us. Nope, it can never be us.

But for the 0.1% of the population who actually care about Halloween, those who take the time to dress up and even hold a bomb-ass party, this post is for you.

Khaleesi (Daenerys Targaryen) – Game of Thrones

Perhaps the fan obsession with the Mother of Dragons has toned down a bit but she is still in the running for the top Halloween costumes this year. And rightly so – the last of the Targaryan scion (if you don’t count Aegon Targaryen aka Jon Snow) is one of the most intriguing characters in the seven kingdoms.

But if you are tired of the platinum blonde hair and draping cloaks, perhaps Arya Stark’s armour would suffice. After all, dressing up as no one is the best Halloween stunt you can ever pull.

Offred – The Handmaid’s Tale

Since the premier of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale in 2017, women all over have been dressing as the Handmaids to make a feminist statement (and a political one), and to fight various crimes against women.

From Buenos Aires to Philadelphia to London, women are donning red cloaks and white bonnets and finding their power in the suppressed voices of the Handmaids of Gilead. Therefore, it’s only right that the Handmaids costume is still one of our top options for Halloween this year, especially if you are channelling the most badass of them all – Offred/June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss)

Dolores Abernathy – Westworld

HBO's Westworld S1-2 is on Showmax

Played by Evan Rachel Wood, Dolores Abernathy’s costumes serve more than just an aesthetic purpose on Westworld. They also reveal her character development and evolution from just a sweet farm girl to the conscious vengeful host that pulls the trigger to kill the park’s creator Robert Ford.

Or perhaps Thandie Newton’s Maeve is your spirit animal and you want to experiment with her Victorian retro-vintage look. Go forth, own Halloween.
