Star Trek Beyond (2016)
The crew of the Enterprise returns in another instalment of the rebooted series. (Also watch the other two, Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness on Showmax.)
Chris Pine delivers a brilliantly charismatic performance as Captain Kirk in the Star Trek reboots, supported in full by his castmates and production team. Everyone is perfectly cast again – Zoe Saldana as Uhura, John Cho as Sulu, Zachary Quinto as Spock and more.
The Federation employees are on a quest to save the galaxy … again. But a lot has changed personally. Kirk has earned a promotion and Spock is his replacement. Spock and Uhura are over – time hasn’t stood still. They must now work together (peacefully) and face a frightful new enemy that’s ready to obliterate them.
The CGI is flawless from the Enterprise, down to the alien world the characters are stranded on. The interpersonal conflicts and relationships draw you in, so it’s not just “another alien movie”. You will sob, though, knowing that this is the last role (as Chekov) that Anton Yelchin filmed before his untimely death in a car accident.
Tasha Robinson from theverge.com loves the team vibe: “Star Trek: Beyond does have a strength that its predecessors lacked: it puts the focus on the larger ensemble, rather than solely on Kirk as the maverick lone hero.”
