5 moments from Tiek Tok Boem! that will leave you speechless

Showmax has just dropped Tiek Tok Boem!, a jaw-dropping 90-minute documentary that takes a deep dive into the wild, untamed world of Afrikaans TikTok. This eye-opening film explores the darker, often dangerous side of the platform, where creators push boundaries and take risks that might leave you questioning just how far they’ll go.

From someone flushing their ex’s ashes down the toilet to a suicide attempt broadcast live, TikTok Boem! unveils the shocking and, at times, terrifying extremes of TikTok culture.

Created by Rian van Heerden and Provoco (the team behind the SAFTA-winning Sex in Afrikaans), Tiek Tok Boem! gives viewers a front-row seat to the most controversial TikTok accounts.

These include:

In celebration of the doccie dropping today, we have compiled the five most outrageous, unmissable moments from the documentary.

1. Terrible Tess’s big oops

The 58-year-old known as Tess has become one of the most outspoken and unapologetically bold Afrikaans TikTokers on the platform. She skyrocketed to viral fame after a controversial TikTok Live where she casually visited the loo. In a bid to prove to viewers that she was indeed using the facilities, Tess turned her phone downward, the moment sparked a social media frenzy, and Tess went from an online personality to an overnight sensation.

In the documentary, Tess shares all the behind-the-scenes details of how her impromptu bathroom break turned into one of TikTok's most talked-about moments, from the initial shock to the viral aftermath.

2. Amelda vs Leigh

We dive into the explosive feud between two Afrikaans TikTok stars Amelda and Leigh, uncovering the roots of their rivalry. Both influencers share their sides, revealing how their contrasting personalities sparked the drama. Things took a shocking turn when Amelda’s daughter got involved, leading Amelda to flush her ex's ashes down the toilet in a defiant act aimed at her daughter, who was on a Live with Leigh. This shocking moment ignited an online firestorm, leaving fans stunned by the personal animosity at play.

3. Christiaan, Dr Phillips, and Nina’s love triangle

The documentary delves deep into the real story behind Nina’s involvement in the escalating feud between Christiaan and Dr Phillips, uncovering the role she played in intensifying the animosity between these two social media personalities and their love triangle. Was Nina the instigator, or was she simply caught in the crossfire of a battle far bigger than anyone anticipated?

The love triangle became so intense that both Christiaan and Dr Phillips explained, in no uncertain terms, why they wanted nothing more to do with Nina. Christiaan, once deeply infatuated with her, now spoke with a mix of disappointment and frustration, detailing how her actions had shattered his trust.

Meanwhile, Dr Phillips, who had once seen potential in their connection, expressed how he feels about Nina: "I don't have any issues with her personally, but I'd say she needs professional help and must ease up on the booze. If people think I drink, she drinks way more but once again, I think she needs psychological help to sort herself out because I think her problem is she craves acceptance on TikTok."

4. The followers and their impact

The comments section on TikTok is far more than just a space for likes and reactions - it’s the battleground where the real drama unfolds. Here, followers hold immense power, shaping the narrative and driving the direction of a TikToker's career.

With every comment, they can either fuel rivalries, spark new scandals, or amplify existing tensions. The impact of fans has never been greater; their opinions can make or break an influencer’s reputation in the blink of an eye. In this digital age, TikTokers are no longer just at the mercy of their content - they’re deeply impacted by the voices of their followers, for better or worse.

In the documentary, we see the harsh reality of the impact of fame; for example, Tippex reached his boiling point and had to retreat to life on a farm as he could no longer handle the notoriety, while Leigh attempted to commit suicide live on TikTok.

5. Bin Laken’s legal battles

Controversial TikToker Bin Laken found himself under investigation by specialist investigator Mike Bolhuis, amid mounting rumours and serious accusations. Several TikTokers came forward, alleging that Bin Laken had allegedly deliberately sabotaged their reputations. These explosive claims intensified the firestorm around him, sparking even more controversy.

On Tiek Tok Boem!, Bin reveals why he does what he does - according to him, all of these antics are just for show, and he's only doing it because, he says, that’s what people want. “I wanna act and make a show. I give people a show, that's what people want, they don't join your Live to bake or sit around knitting. I'm going to put on that show, even if it comes with the hate, even if it comes with whatever it brings, a show is a show, I'm going to bring it,” he explained.
