Giants: Buccaneers' untold story streams live on Showmax PL
Prepare to be captivated as SuperSport, in collaboration with the award-winning film company T+W, proudly brings you Giants, a story about Faith, Family and Football in which iconic South African football teams grant exclusive access to follow and document their league and cup campaigns from all angles.
Giants is part of a long-term SuperSport Originals storytelling project, signalling Africa’s leading sports broadcaster’s most ambitious storytelling initiative, where fans are set to get an extraordinary view into the inner workings of professional football and the human stories that shape Mzansi’s first sporting love: the beautiful game called iDiski.
There is no better start than with one of the traditional institutions of South African football - Orlando Pirates Football Club. Giants Season 1 will chronicle the events inside the hallowed corridors of the Buccaneers’ 2024-25 season.
Set to premiere on 27 July 2025, across Mzansi Magic (161), SuperSport PSL (202) on DStv and Showmax Premier League, Ezika Magebhula headlines the first season of Giants, with future seasons set to feature more South African teams, including Ezimnyama Ngenkane.
A project brought to life through the support of production partners Carling Black Label, Toyota, and Vodacom, Giants is a surefire bastion of South African sporting archival work rooted in the humanity and cultural resonance of sport and in particular, football.

Coinciding with the start of the new football season, DStv Compact customers will get an exclusive look into the soul of the Buccaneers, revealing the unseen sacrifices and personal triumphs behind the badge.
SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha says: “We are absolutely delighted to bring Giants to life. The docuseries is another step in our journey towards original storytelling, of which we are putting the fan experience at the heart.”
This is only the start. Set to rival shows such as All or Nothing, Giants is the biggest project of this nature undertaken by SuperSport. Indeed, something “Giant” is coming …
“This commitment not only signifies our unwavering dedication to consistent storytelling,” Ramovha continued, “but also the value we place on humanising our sporting heroes. This project is an act of cultural preservation and amplification that benefits our valued viewers for generations to come.”
The continued collaboration with T+W builds on this legacy, with the almost year-long making of Giants a fitting reflection of this dedication.
“Giants has been a labour of love,” says Luthando Tshaya, Co-Series Director for Giants.
“To finally see it come to life and connect with viewers who love the game, the culture, and the legacy behind Orlando Pirates—there’s no better feeling. This series is not just about football; it’s about family, faith beyond football."
Wanani Rantloane, Co-Series Director, added that the audiences should brace themselves for an unfiltered, deeply human experience.
"Expect the truth," says Rantloane. "You’ll see players not just as athletes, but as sons, fathers, dreamers. Expect moments that will make you laugh, tear up, and remember why football is so deeply woven into who we are.”
According to Siyanda Manzini, Series Producer of Giants, the inspiration behind starting this five-year journey by documenting such a colossal institution like Orlando Pirates was simple, yet profound.
“Orlando Pirates is a pillar not just in sport, but in South African culture. Pirates is not just a club, it’s a feeling, a rhythm, a history. That’s what we wanted to honour."
Tshaya adds that, “We felt the time was right to document what it truly means to wear the black and white jersey, to chase greatness, and to carry the hopes of millions.”
The filmmaking process itself was as intricate as a tactical masterclass.
"We knew from the start this wasn’t going to be a typical sports doccie. It required patience, precision, and ubuntu," explains Manzini.
This guiding ethos is what makes this first season and the seasons to come of Giants a must-watch.
Giants pulls at the heartstrings of viewers to carve a distinctly poignant and empathetic perspective of the men and women who otherwise seem impervious to pain and disappointment, whilst simultaneously highlighting the cultural impact on the fabric of South African society.
Comprising five powerful episodes, each with its own heart and rhythm, Giants is meticulously structured to capture the humanity, sporting and cultural resonance of the Buccaneers.
The journey begins with Episode 1: Awakening the Sleeping Giant, as Orlando Pirates embark on their quest to end a 13-year league drought.
Don't miss the epic premiere of Giants on 27 July on SuperSport, on Showmax Premier League at 22:00
