My Fairytale Wedding: A chaotic tale of love, lies and Lagos living
Step aside, Cinderella! There’s a new fairytale in town and it’s anything but ordinary. My Fairytale Wedding is now streaming on Showmax and like an extravagant Lagos party, it is bold, dramatic, and unapologetically over the top. With its star-studded cast and whirlwind of love triangles, heartbreaks, and opulent escapades, this Nollywood series has all the ingredients to keep you glued to your screen.
The first episode kicks off with a bang or, more precisely, a cake crash. Moji (played to perfection by Ini Edo), our spirited leading lady, is introduced dancing the night away at her cousin’s wedding, only to topple the cake in a hilariously cringeworthy moment. Her nosy Aunty Funke (Ayo Mogaji) gasps in horror as her ever-reliable best friend, Dafe (Daniel Etim-Effiong), swoops in to save the day. Dafe is the epitome of the friend-zoned Prince Charming, always by Moji’s side, yet forever overlooked in her search for love.

Moji’s journey to happily-ever-after isn’t a straight path; it’s a rollercoaster. Between her career as a celebrity baker, a meddling family that goes the extra mile to bring prophets to her bakery, and a string of romantic mishaps, her life is a blend of comedy and chaos. Just when we think she’s found a spark with the dashing Marcus (Vine Olugu), heartbreak strikes again in a twist that’s as shocking as it is devastating. Marcus is engaged, and the cake Moji lovingly baked is for his wedding. The irony!
Meanwhile, Moji’s squad brings their own drama to the mix. Precious (Lilian Esoro) seems to have it all: a doting husband and a glamorous lifestyle, yet struggles with intimacy in her marriage. Her friend Tima (Carolyna Hutchings) finds herself navigating murky waters with her sugar daddy, Odogwu (Kanayo O. Kanayo), whose manipulative tendencies culminate in an emotional showdown over her pregnancy.

The first two episodes of the My Fairytale Wedding don’t shy away from tackling real-life issues, from societal pressures to settle down to the weight of familial expectations. Tina Mba delivers a powerhouse performance as Moji’s mother, Feyintola, whose hidden battle with cancer adds a poignant layer to the narrative. Her plea for Moji to settle down before “joining her ancestors” is both heartbreaking and deeply relatable in its cultural context.
Adding to the drama is a subplot involving a mystic House of Wonders, where Precious introduces Moji to Madam Fantasia (Shaffy Bello) and her box of kayamata, a love potion! While the comedic potential of Moji testing the potion on Dafe is tantalising, it also underscores her desperation to find love.
But let’s talk about the men in this series. Daniel Etim-Effiong as Dafe and Uzor Arukwe as Lotana bring a mix of charm and complexity to their roles, but it’s Etim-Effiong’s Dafe who steals the show. His unwavering support for Moji, including bailing her out of jail after a fiery confrontation with Marcus, makes him the ultimate contender for her heart. Will she finally see what’s been right in front of her all along?
My Fairytale Wedding is a rollercoaster of emotions, seamlessly blending humour, heartbreak, and hope. The chemistry between the cast is electric, and the show’s glamorous Lagos backdrop adds a touch of magic to every scene. With its compelling characters and unpredictable twists, this series promises to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
