Youngins Season 1 episodes 4-6: Offside rules
We asked Tumelo to give us a full TikTok recap of the drama, but he was off being famous so we’ve had to do it ourselves. Episodes 4-6 centre on the first football game of the season, Buhle’s ambitions, Sefako and Tumelo’s breakup, Mahlatse’s dumb-strick crush on Amo, and Principal Mthembu’s efforts to isolate Amo and intimidate her into silence, starting with a targeted raid on Amo, Buhle, Khaya, Tshepo and Mahlatse’s dorm rooms.
What happened in Youngins episodes 1-3?
Tshedza Pictures’ (Adulting, Outlaws) Youngins introduced five students at government boarding school Olifantsfontein High – new girl Amo Mosweu (Ayakha Ntunja), head girl Buhle Kunene (Kealeboga Masango), Buhle’s soccer star boyfriend Khaya Jali (Toka Matabane), Tumelo Dibakwane (Lebohang Lephatsoana) who’s the only openly gay boy in school, and his Grade 10 friend and roommate Mahlatse Jiyane (Thabiso Ramotshela), who’s the school’s drug dealer. Buhle played mean pranks on Amo when they were forced to be roommates, and Tumelo’s in a secret relationship with Olifontsfontein’s head boy Sefako Masemola (Tabile Tau). Our five students bonded by sneaking out of school grounds behind strict Matron Lulu’s (Sannah Mnchunu) back to go to a club party. But the older pervert who hit on Amo at the club turned out to be Olifantsfontein High’s headmaster, Principal Mthembu (Loyiso Macdonald). Uh oh. What happened in Youngins episode 4?
It seems “Principal Pervert” swept his club encounter with Amo under the rug during assembly, and Amo is grossed out when she hears Buhle’s friend Palesa (Amogelang Telekelo) sighing over “Principal Bae”. Amo warns the gang that the Principal saw all five of them at the club but not even Mahlatse’s crush is strong enough for him to risk taking on the principal with her and getting expelled. Later Amo phones her Aunt Thuli (Londiwe Nene) to check the Principal’s reputation.

After Pearl gives class clown Tshepo (Tshepo Matlala) a fail for his poetry, Mahlatse reads the poem that he wrote for Amo out loud, but she doesn’t realise that it’s about her! Mahlatse’s crush on Amo is so bad that Tumelo demands therapist fees just for listening to him. Khaya, who’s bored with Buhle, tries to pass his girlfriend on to Sefako, Tumelo asks Sefako why they have to get their boy-joy while hiding in the bushes, and Khaya unwittingly drops a bomb on Tumelo’s love life when he jokingly asks Sefako whether he’s gay. Amo is intrigued by all the open discussions about sex and masturbation at the school and back in their dorm, Buhle gives her a quick peek at her vibrator, nicknamed Bob the Builder.
Sefako tries to stand up for Khaya when Mr Ramathuba (Simo Magwaza) yells at Khaya, belittles him, and physically assaults him (pulling his ear), but Mr Ramathuba threatens to demote Sefako and sends Khaya to the principal’s office. Khaya is shaking, but while Principal Mthembu is certainly a pervert, so far he’s the only man in Khaya’s life who, instead of yelling at him, gives him the gentle encouragement that he needs, and offers real help for his academic struggles. Then, after Principal Mthembu spots Amo with the other four, his wheels start turning.
What happened in Youngins episode 5?
It’s Saturday morning and time for the first big soccer game of the season! Tumelo sneaks footage of Mahlatse having a rummage under the covers to post on TikTok. But when he sees Mahlatse preparing for the big match by rolling out joints to sell, Tumelo warns him that the teachers will be on high alert in the stands. In the showers, team captain Sefako is dancing around with his players and boosting morale. If he comes out as gay, will he lose that? Can’t have the boys worrying that he’ll treat them the same way that they treat the girls!

Meanwhile in the girls’ dorms, Buhle scoots a reluctant Amo out of bed and preaches to her from the book of WAGS (wives and girlfriends of sports stars). Buhle lays out her roadmap to Amo: First, Miss South Africa, then, supporting Khaya at his Bafana Bafana matches while wearing her sash. Then, Miss World (provided it’s not Miss India’s year), then 20 years later, Madam President Buhle Kunene.
At the game when Tumelo gets a bit too supportive in the stands, while both Amo and Mahlatse are bored to tears until Khaya gets fouled by another player, a fight breaks out, and Khaya blows an easy penalty kick. Buhle fails her first WAG test when she storms off the sidelines at the first sign of failure (and sees the other team paying cash for handjobs around the corner, yikes!), while Khaya seems to rebound from his misery after some encouraging words from Amo. Scared of getting outed, Sefako breaks up with Tumelo, but all conversations around heartbreak get put on hold when the dorm heads declare a spot check throughout the boarding school. And the episode ends with Mr Ramathuba picking up Mahlatse’s Bible – the one he hollowed out to hide his drug stash in.
What happened in Youngins episode 6?
Whew! Mr Ramathuba now sees Mahlatse as not just a maths lover, but as a Bible boy! Their dorm search is called off and Mahlatse gets an A+ and a pat on the head. As Sefako and Khaya toast their own narrow escape with a drink, though, Matron Lulu confiscates the contents of Buhle’s furry kitty purse. And when Mahlatse and Tumelo ask around, they find out that only their five student dorms got spot checked. Amo believes the principal is sending them a message and tells the others that they need to push back, but not even Mahlatse tries to stand up for Amo this time, and Buhle warns Amo not to be a Sarafina. There is one silver lining. Could we see a happier Matron Lulu going forward when Buhle and Amo overhear her trying Bob the Builder for herself?

Tumelo’s breakup is really putting him through it, but he perks up a bit when he makes a new friend, Alex (Katlego Moloke). And after class clown Tshepo steals Palesa’s tampon and makes jokes about her virginity, a bolder Mahlatse tackles him, confiscates “his” tampon, and tells the class that virginity is just a social construct. Pearl, at least, is impressed and inspired. Riding high on boldness, Mahlatse invites Amo to the netball court, which as romantic locations go, gets zero stars and, alas, he drops the ball on his confession.
Principal Mthembu has his own agenda when he calls Buhle and Amo to his office together to shame Buhle about her vibrator. After he sends Buhle out, he warns Amo that she has a lot to lose. Principal Mthembu wants Amo too scared to fight back, but when another girl, Zintle (Lihle Ngubo), dollies herself up to see the principal next, Amo listens at the door and overhears Zintle giggling when Principal Mthembu asks her whether she’s seen “one of these” before. It looks like Amo will need to be a Sarafina after all. Stream Youngins S1 on Showmax now. 3 new episodes each Thursday Watch the Youngins trailer
