Nhlanhla Kunene drops masterclass ahead of Adulting finale
Ahead of the Adulting S3 finale this Saturday, 19 April 2025, star Nhlanhla Kunene invites aspiring performers to explore the emotional depths of character work in his Showmax Masterclass, which focuses on portraying men with authenticity, vulnerability, and complexity.
Nhlanhla was up for the SAFTA last year as Eric in Adulting, which holds the record for the most views 10 days after launch of any title since the platform’s relaunch.
Also known for The River, Lavish, and Queendom, Nhlanhla uses his lived experiences growing up in Ladysmith and Ivory Park to shed light on the emotional intricacies often hidden behind the masks men wear in society.

“Performance isn’t just about acting – it’s healing,” says Nhlanhla. “We reflect someone’s reality and give voice to those who are often unheard. To portray truthfully, you must understand the character’s background, motivations, and emotions. You must research deeply, live the moment, and embody their truth.”
In the Masterclass, Nhlanhla breaks down the importance of multidimensional characters and the responsibility performers carry when tackling roles that mirror real social struggles – such as fatherhood, economic hardship, and emotional repression. He emphasises breaking stereotypes, especially those surrounding black men, by portraying not just their actions, but the pain, vulnerability, and societal pressures behind them.

Nhlanhla shares insights from his role as Eric in Adulting, a character shaped by poverty, fatherhood, and hustle culture. Through Eric, Nhlanhla confronts childhood memories and community realities, allowing viewers to see the emotional layers often hidden beneath a tough exterior.
He drew inspiration from his childhood experiences, recalling figures like a gent from his hood known as Sipho, who served as role models amidst the uncertainty of their environment. “We thought Sipho had it all figured out, but he was vulnerable too,” Nhlanhla reflects. “It’s a reminder that everyone carries their own burdens, and as actors, it’s our job to bring those stories to life.”

“My hope is that my performances help others feel seen, understood, and healed,” adds Nhlanhla. “Acting isn’t about fame – it’s about reflecting truth and inspiring empathy.”
