Annstella Karimi on playing a diva cop on Showmax's Black & Blue
Annstella Karimi has been a prominent figure in Kenya’s entertainment scene since her debut on KTN’s Hapa Kule News in 2015. She has since starred in popular productions such as Sue na Johnnie, and more recently played a supporting role in Untying Kantai earlier this year. Her career reached a milestone in 2022 when she earned the Kalasha Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Film for her role in Baba Twins, Showmax’s first Kenyan original.
Today, the talented actress continues to solidify her star status by consistently securing roles in top shows. She credits renowned content creator and filmmaker Abel Mutua (Untying Kantai) for discovering her talent during the National Drama Festivals after completing high school. In Showmax’s Black & Blue, Annstella takes on the role of Constable Camila Konde - a bold, unapologetic diva who landed her position thanks to her father, the Deputy Inspector General. Camila is unfiltered, fearless, and lives life to the fullest, just like Annstella.

In an exclusive interview, Annstella reflects on their experience with Black & Blue.
You have appeared in comedy projects such as Hapa Kule News in the past. How was this project different for you?
With Black & Blue, I finally got to play a rich kid, which was a refreshing change from the slay queens I have portrayed before who are just pretending to be wealthy. My character was energetic and bubbly, and for once, I didn’t have to act like I was financially struggling - I had it all. The role felt a bit more laid-back compared to what I’ve played in the past.

This was also my first time playing a cop! I had to learn a lot of little details about policing, like how to properly hold a gun. I remember that I was also filming A Nurse Toto at the same time, so I kept slipping up and saying “patient” instead of “suspect” in one scene. Can you describe your experience working with the Black & Blue cast and the chemistry on set?
It was an incredible experience. Most of my castmates, like Wamiti Hillary, were people I hadn’t worked with before. We started as castmates, became friends, and now we talk often and share experiences. The chemistry was amazing, making improvisation so much easier since we were comfortable with each other.
What was it like playing a character who often prioritises personal image over her duties?
It was quite easy because that's what I do [chuckles]. I was simply being me.
What aspect of Camila’s character did you find most enjoyable or challenging?
Camila is always upbeat and genuinely cares about her colleagues, something I could relate to. As for the challenges I faced, maintaining a cheerful persona during my lowest moments was especially tough.
What’s the most unusual role you’ve played so far in your career?
The most unusual role I’ve played was as Nicky in the Showmax Original Untying Kantai. She’s a junkie and completely obsessed with her ex - two things that are far from who I am.

Tell us about the most memorable moment you had on set or behind the scenes while filming.
Getting Abdi Shuria to do a TikTok video with me was a surprise for everyone! [laughs] Abdi isn’t a social media person and didn’t really know how it all works. But he picked up the sound perfectly, and his lip-sync was spot on - just amazing!
As an actor, who has been your inspiration and role model?
The person who discovered me and gave me my first TV job right after high school was Abel Mutua. He’s one of the few who’s managed to keep his sanity in this incredibly crazy industry for so long. I wouldn’t say I have it all figured out yet; sometimes, I feel like crashing and even think about quitting. Every year, I tell myself it’s my last. But then I talk to Abel - he loves telling stories, he’s funny, and he’ll always ask, “What exactly are you feeling? What do you want to do?”.
Starting out in this industry, it’s crucial to surround yourself with positive people. Avoid those who only take you out for drinks when you’re down; instead, find people who truly listen and engage in meaningful conversations.
