Reliving The Walking Dead, season by season

Every single episode of every season of this grim, gory season (so far) is now available to stream on Showmax. The Walking Dead kicks off with a sheriff waking up from a coma to find his town taken over by zombies, aka the Walkers – and it just gets crazier from there.

Spoiler alert: It should probably go without saying, but the rest of this article is only for Walking Dead fans. If you haven’t yet been bitten by the TWD bug, start binge-watching from Season 1 now!

If you’re struggling to remember what happened in each season, here’s a (ahem) handy guide.

Season 1

Rick Grimes awakens from a coma, after being shot, in a post-apocalyptic world filled with flesh-eating zombies, dubbed the Walkers. Rick sets out to find his family and discover the origins of the walker virus. He joins a group of survivors who band together, but in a post-apocalyptic world, the zombies aren’t the only threats to their continued survival.

Season 2

While searching for someone who has gone missing, the group discovers an isolated farm, where tensions arise among members of the main group, and the mysterious inhabitants of the farm, whose secrets and motives are unclear.

Season 3

After discovering a potential safe haven, the group takes refuge in a large fortified prison, but this security is threatened by a nearby community led by a nefarious man known as the Governor. This is widely thought to be the “slowest” season, but you need to watch it all if you want to know what’s going on in the next.

Season 4

Rick and his fellow survivors struggle to maintain their stable lives at the prison as problems arise in the face of new threats within and outside the compound, including a deadly flu strain and the return of the vengeful Governor. In the final episode, as multiple paths collide, Rick comes face to face with sheer brutality. Will he and the group have what it takes to survive?

Season 5

Rick learns the true motives of the Terminans. Part of the group travels to Washington in search of a possible cure for the walker virus. Along the way, they discover a new potential safe haven.

Season 6

The group has trouble assimilating into Alexandria as they face the impending threat of a massive herd of walkers. A vast organisation known as the Saviours also emerges to threaten the community.

Season 7

Negan, the leader of the Saviours, uses numbers, power and lethal brutality (including Lucille, his barbed-wire-covered baseball bat) to coerce Rick and Alexandria to make regular offerings of supplies and weapons. Rick seeks allies to help confront Negan.

Season 8

The Alexandrians continue their fight against Negan and the Saviours. Rick and the leaders of the Hilltop and the Kingdom unite their forces to start a rebellion against the Saviours, initiating a war for the freedom of the communities.

Season 9

The survivors face obstacles and dangers both outside and inside their alliances, with the threat of the mysterious Whisperers looming. This is the season that broke a lot of fans’ hearts. (But there’s nothing like the news of the upcoming Rick Grimes movie to perk us up!)

Season 10

The shadows of The Whispers still loom threateningly over Carol, Ezekiel, Daryl and Connie as they attempt to pull their lives together in a world without long-time leader Rick Grimes. In this season’s premiere, the show returns to its hard-hitting core, and fans won’t want to miss out on a single minute of the action and drama.

Production of S10 was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, so fans will have to wait a little longer for the conclusion of this season. Episodes 1-15 are available now, with six more to come. The Walking Dead has also been renewed for an eleventh season.
