Roger Federer: A Champion’s Journey (2023)

The clay dust has settled at Roland Garros this June with fans cheering on an ultimate victory for Novak Djokovic and mourning the exit of Rafael Nadal. But the tennis world is still talking about Novak’s greatest-ever rival, the GOAT (greatest of all time) himself, Roger Federer.

When 41-year-old former Wimbledon ball boy Roger Federer announced his professional retirement from Grand Slam tennis in September 2022, he’d won 82% of all the matches he’d ever played, racking up 1 251 wins over 1 526 singles matches – along with Olympic Gold and Silver for Men’s Doubles Tennis.

As we wait for Wimbledon 2023 (3-16 July), Roxane Schlumberger, writer-director of Roger Federer: A Champion’s Journey, looks back at how Roger grew a fanatical and diverse following, including Rolling Stone Ron Wood, ex UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and tennis greats Martina Navratilova, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic – two of his greatest rivals – in this 49-minute film on Roger’s career highlights. Come along for the journey, from his 1998 Junior Wimbledon title win at the age of 17, to his astounding recoveries from injury, and taking a bow in 2022.

PS: Federer fans looking for a different kind of journey can join Trevor Noah and Roger Federer as they hop aboard a train to explore Switzerland together in the Swiss Tourism Bureau advertisement The Ride of a Lifetime. The two share Swiss-South African roots, since Roger’s mom Lynette Durand is from Kempton Park.
