What to watch on Showmax in Africa in May 2024

Showmax is having its own Barbenheimer moment this May! Last year’s biggest smash hit, Barbie, is coming First to Showmax, and it just wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t pair it with last year’s biggest Oscar winner, Oppenheimer. Plus, there are some hotly anticipated Showmax Originals series to enjoy, including Empini, Big Girl Small World and The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip – drama guaranteed.

The Real Housewives of Nairobi S2 | Stream from 10 May, with new episodes on Fridays

Named Best TV Show at the 2024 Kalasha Awards, Season 1 of The Real Houses of Nairobi had all of Kenya talking on its way to becoming the biggest Showmax Original in Kenya yet.

In Season 2, actress and entrepreneur Minne Kariuki returns, along with Vera Sidika, who’s eager to reintroduce herself, and business mogul and tastemaker Dr Catherine Masitsa. They are joined by new cast members, including lawyer and professional bodybuilder Farah Esmail, beauty and aesthetics entrepreneur Xenah Nyambu, and entrepreneur Reja Keji Ladu.

The Real Housewives of Nairobi is produced by Eugene Mbugua’s D&R Studios (formerly Young Rich Television) and is part of The Real Housewives franchise, licensed as a format by NBCUniversal Formats, which is part of Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Big Girl Small World | Stream from 8 May, with new episodes on Wednesdays

Big Girl Small World is a Kenyan romcom series that follows Ciku, a plus-size woman who stumbles through a journey of self-discovery after a humiliating scandal. In the process, she finds out what it means to live big in a world determined to shrink her. 

The 13-part series stars newcomers June Njenga and Daine Njuguna as Ciku and her former best friend Aisha respectively, with Emmanuel Mugo (Igiza), Fidel Maithya (Single Kiasi), Derek Bbanga (Second Family), and Kui Kabala (Njoro wa Uba) also starring.

The series features an all-female writing team of head writer Angela Ruhinda (Binti), Gathoni Kamau (script continuity on Supa Modo), Wanjiru Kairu (The Agency), Safina Iqbal (Disconnect) and Kui Mwai.

Big Girl Small World is directed by Nick Mutuma, behind the Kalasha-nominated films You Again and Sincerely Daisy, and produced by Kevin Njue of AMVCA and Kalasha-winning film 18 Hours.

Untying Kantai | Stream from 9 May, with new episodes every Thursday

Untying Kantai is a 13-part dramedy that follows King Kantai (Benson Ojuwa from County 49), a man who has spent 30 years of his life working hard to provide for his family, only to be conned out of his life savings. In the midst of his mid-life crisis, fate throws him a curveball in the form of a truckload of antipsychotic drugs worth millions. Kantai is faced with a life-changing decision: turn the drugs over to the authorities and live with his past mistakes, or take a chance and sell them to secure his family’s future. 

The series also stars singer and Kora Awards winner Silayio (Nafsi), Sanchez Ombasa (Faithless), Mercy Mutisya (Kina), Francis Ouma (Volume), Dennis Mugo (Tahidi High), Pascal Tokodi (Selina), Blessing Lung’aho (Country Queen), Keith Chuaga (Igiza) and Mary Mwikali (Second Family).

Untying Kantai is written by Abel Mutua and directed by Philip Karanja, the Philit Productions duo behind the Kalasha-winning comedy Sue na Jonnie and AMVCA-winning films A Grand Little Lie and Click Click Bang.

Empini S1 | Showmax Original | Thursdays from 23 May

Multi-award winner Nambitha Ben-Mazwi is starring in her first Showmax Original, Empini, opposite three-time SAFTA winner Siyabonga Thwala.  

Set in the dangerous world of the private security industry, the 52-episode series is a high-stakes, action-packed drama about Ndoni Themba (Ben-Mazwi), a deeply troubled private security bodyguard in search of answers.

Thwala plays her mentor, Khaya Bhodoza: a prominent businessman and political stalwart. 

Ben-Mazwi, nicknamed Lady Nam by her fans, was named Hot Chick of the Year at the Feather Awards and Most Stylish Performing Artist in Film/TV at the SA Style Awards. A Global Citizen ambassador, she was hand-picked by Beyoncé to appear in Black Is King and has had trending roles in the likes of The Queen, The Estate, Scandal, Broken Vows and Doubt.

Thwala has won Best Actor SAFTAs for his iconic roles as Mpiyakhe on Isibaya (which also earned him a Royalty Soapie Award), Vusi Zwane on Scandal!, and Musa on Intersexions. He’s also a fan-favourite from the likes of eHostela, The River, and The Republic. 

The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip – South Africa S1 | 27 May 2024

The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip – South Africa is the spinoff that fans have been waiting for, taking eight of South Africa’s most iconic Housewives on a luxury trip to Jamaica. 

The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip – South Africa dream cast includes Beverley Steyn (The Real Housewives of Cape Town S1); Christall Kay (The Real Housewives of Johannesburg S1-S2); LaConco (The Real Housewives of Durban S1-S2); Lethabo Lejoy Mathatho (The Real Housewives of Johannesburg S2-S3); Liz Prins (The Real Housewives of Gqeberha S1); Londie London (The Real Housewives of Durban S2); Melany Viljoen (The Real Housewives of Pretoria S1); and the longest-serving Housewife in Africa, Nonku Williams (The Real Housewives of Durban S1-S4,) who just broke the tie she had with her fellow Durban cast member Sorisha Naidoo.

The Real Housewives of Durban S4 Reunion | 15 and 22 May

MaBlerh will host The Real Housewives of Durban reunion for the second year in a row. 

Going into the reunion, the ladies seem split into two core groups. On the one side, you have Sorisha Naidoo, Slee Ndlovu, and newcomers Ameigh Thompson and Angel Ndlela. On the other side, you have Jojo Robinson, Maria Valaskatzis, Nonku Williams, and newcomer Zama Ngcobo. With the ladies from each camp not seeing eye to eye, viewers have a lot of unanswered questions.

International movies

Oppenheimer | 6 May

Oppenheimer tells the true story of “the father of the atomic bomb”, American scientist J Robert Oppenheimer and how he risked destroying the world in his attempt to save it.

Oppenheimer won seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan (Tenet, Dunkirk, Inception, Interstellar and The Dark Knight trilogy) and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders), and over 300 more awards.  

Oppenheimer has a 93% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with AV Club saying: “It’s Christopher Nolan’s best film so far, a step up to a new level for one of our finest filmmakers, and a movie that burns itself into your brain.”

Barbie | First on Showmax | 22 May

To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.

With two-time Oscar nominee Margot Robbie in the title role, Barbie was the biggest blockbuster of 2023 globally and is the highest-grossing live-action comedy film of all time. 

Barbie won over 190 awards and was up for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Screenplay (for director Greta Gerwig and cowriter Noam Baumbach), Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling as Ken and Supporting Actress for America Ferrera as Gloria. 

Barbie has an 88% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with The New Yorker calling it, “brilliant, beautiful and fun.”

Trolls Band Together | 16 May

After two films of true friendship and relentless flirting, Poppy and Branch (voiced by Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake) are, finally, officially a couple (#broppy)! As they grow closer, Poppy discovers that Branch and his estranged brothers were once her favourite boy band, BroZone. When his closest brother Floyd (Joburg-born Grammy nominee Troye Sivan) is kidnapped, Branch and Poppy must embark on a journey to reunite the family and rescue Floyd.

RogerEbert.com says Trolls Band Together is the best of the three Trolls movies – “sweet without being sugary, colourful, and very charming, with terrific voice talent and a lot of music.” 

Common Sense Media recommends the film for ages 6+.

Retribution | Stream from 20 May

Liam Neeson stars in Retribution, a ticking-clock thriller that straps audiences in for a high-octane ride of redemption and revenge. 

When a mysterious caller puts a bomb under his car seat, Matt Turner (Neeson) begins a high-speed chase across the city to complete a specific series of tasks. With his kids trapped in the back seat and a bomb that will explode if they get out of the car, a normal commute becomes a twisted game of life or death as Matt follows the stranger’s increasingly dangerous instructions in a race against time to save his family.

Variety says Retribution is “Speed in a Mercedes Family SUV,” adding that “At 71, Neeson has lost none of his sullen machismo, and this booby-trapped-car movie whizzes by…” 

A Good Person | 9 May

In A Good Person, Morgan Freeman and Florence Pugh co-star as Daniel and Allison, whose lives are both shattered by the car accident that takes Daniel’s daughter’s life. As Daniel navigates raising his teenage granddaughter and Allison seeks redemption, they discover that friendship, forgiveness, and hope can flourish in unlikely places.

As The Hollywood Reporter says, “Pugh delivers a superb starring performance that serves to accentuate her growing artistic stature and co-star Morgan Freeman turns in his best work in years.”

Fast Charlie | 27 May

Fast Charlie stars former James Bond Pierce Brosnan as Charlie Swift, a fixer with a problem: the target he’s whacked is missing his head and the only way Charlie will be paid is if the body can be identified. Enter Marcie Kramer (Morena Baccarin, Deadpool), the victim’s ex-wife and a woman with all the skills Charlie needs. 

The film has an 83% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Deadline calling it, “A down-home Southern gangster yarn with a staggering body count.”

Inside | 23 May

Willem Dafoe stars in this psychological thriller that follows ambitious art thief Nemo into a luxury New York penthouse where he becomes trapped when the heist goes wrong. Locked inside with nothing but priceless works of art, he must use all his cunning and invention to survive as he starts to lose his grip on reality.

Little White Lies says, “A novel take on the heist film, Inside fosters a surreal, unnerving atmosphere and makes voyeurs of its audience – like spectators in a gallery, murmuring about the meaning of a dead man’s art.”

River Wild | 30 May

River Wild follows siblings Gray and Joey, who love but distrust each other as they embark on a white-water rafting trip with a childhood friend and a small group of tourists. But their adventure turns into a fight for survival when they find themselves trapped in the wilderness with a killer.

Both a reimagining of and a sequel to the 1994 thriller The River Wild, the film co-stars Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) and Adam Brody (Shazam! Fury of the Gods).

Assassin | Stream from 13 May

Durban-born SAFTA and Africa Movie Academy Award nominee Nomzamo Mbatha (Shaka iLembe) stars in Assassin opposite Bruce Willis in his final role. 

Willis plays Valmora, the head of a private military operation that uses experimental tech to conduct deadly covert missions. When an agent dies during a secret assignment, his wife Alexa (Mbatha) steps in to bring the killer to justice.

Chucky S3B | First on Showmax | Wednesdays from 1 May

Chucky has moved in with the most powerful family in the world — America’s First Family, inside the infamous walls of the White House. How did Chucky wind up here? What in God’s name does he want? And how can Jake, Devon, and Lexy possibly get to Chucky inside the world’s most secure house, all while balancing the pressures of romantic relationships and growing up? 

Chucky was up for Outstanding Drama Series at this year’s GLAAD Awards, as well as Best Horror Series at the 2024 Saturn Awards, as voted by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. As Jake, Zackary Arthur was also up for a 2024 Saturn Award as Best Younger Performer in a TV Series.  

This season, look out for Devon Sawa (Final Destination) as President James Collins, Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) as Evelyn Elliot, and Oscar nominee Brad Dourif, who’s voiced Chucky for 36 years and counting, making a rare appearance on screen too. 

Season 3 has a 100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Slashfilm calling it, “The wildest season yet.”

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School S2 | First on Showmax | Express from the US from 10 May

Following the harrowing events of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, our Pretty Little Liars face a fate worse than death: summer school. 

However, Millwood High isn’t the only thing getting in the way of their fun summer jobs and new, dreamy love interests. A new villain, who may or may not have a connection to A, has come to town and is going to put them all to the test.

Original Pretty Little Liars cast member Annabeth Gish (Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches, The Haunting of Hill House) will reprise her role as Dr Sullivan in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan S3 | Binge from 24 May

A prequel to the hit crime drama Power, Raising Kanan stars Mekai Curtis as the young Kanan Stark (played in the original series by Emmy and Grammy winner Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson). 

Season 3 sees Raq make a life-changing decision in the aftermath of the Mafia’s ambush, but is it too little, too late for Kanan, as he looks to pave his own path free of his mother’s lies?

Black Reel winner Wendell Pierce (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Wire) joins the cast this season, with Teen Choice nominee Omar Epps (House M.D.), Grammy nominee Hailey Kilgore (Respect), and Emmy nominee Tony Danza (Who’s the Boss) all returning. 

Raising Kanan has already been renewed for a fourth and fifth season.

The Gilded Age S2 | Binge from 20 May

Season 2 of HBO’s Emmy-winning drama series The Gilded Age kicks off on Easter morning, 1883, with Bertha Russell’s determination to challenge the old system and gain a foothold in society undiminished by the rejection of her bid for a box at the Academy of Music. While George Russell takes on his own battle with a growing union at his steel plant, Marian continues secretly teaching at a girls’ school, and Ada begins an unexpected new courtship. Of course, Agnes approves of none of it. 

The opulent period drama has an 8/10 score on IMDb and a 93% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes for Season 2. HBO has already ordered a third season of this hit, penned by Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes. 

Boiling Point S1 | First On Showmax | Binge from 21 May

Following on from the multi-award-winning 2021 film of the same name, the BAFTA-nominated miniseries Boiling Point is set in a high-pressure restaurant kitchen. Picking up eight months after their mentor Andy Jones suffered a heart attack, the BBC miniseries follows head chef Carly and her team as the stresses of keeping the restaurant running bear down on them amidst a hospitality industry in crisis.

The series has already won the 2024 Casting Directors’ Guild Award for Best Casting in a TV Drama Series, thanks to a powerful ensemble led by Vinette Robinson (Sherlock). Also look out for the likes of British-Nigerian actor Stephen Odubola (The Sandman) who joins the cast.

It has a 100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the Daily Telegraph (UK) calling it “a Michelin-starred TV drama” and “highly stressful TV” in their 5/5 review. 

Fires S1 | Binge from 17 May

The 2019-20 Australian megafires made headlines around the world. Inspired by true events, the anthology series Fires brings to life just some of the stories of those who lived through the Black Summer – stories of heartbreak, loss and survival but also of heroism, humanity, and community in the midst of unimaginable terror. 

The series has won a slew of awards, including Best Miniseries at Australia’s Emmys, the Logies. The  all-star ensemble cast includes Richard Roxburgh (Elvis), Miranda Otto (Lord of the Rings films), Anna Torv (Tess in The Last of Us), Sam Worthington (Avatar films), and more. 

Alex Rider S3 | Mondays from 6 May

Trust no one. Question everything. 

Based on the best-selling Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz, the series stars Otto Farrant as an ordinary teenager enlisted to work on behalf of MI6, where he uses skills he didn’t know he had to become an extraordinary spy.

Kevin McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean) joins the cast for the third and final season, which also brings back British-Nigerian actress Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo (Christopher Robin, Rain Dogs) as Jack, and Marli Siu (Everything I Know About Love) as Kyra.

Chasing the Sun S2 | Binge from 10 May

Chasing the Sun 2 – A Story for South Africa offers fans front-row seats to the Springbok’s awe-inspiring journey to their fourth Rugby World Cup victory – a historic world first. 

The five-part documentary series features never-before-seen footage, interviews with more than 30 players and coaches, and all the highlights from the Springboks’ nail-biting journey to the final. 

The SuperSport and SA Rugby co-production, brought to you by Toyota, Betway, and Spur, has almost as much to live up to as the Springboks did, after the first instalment won the SAFTA for Best Made-For-TV Documentary, among other accolades, and was hailed as “the greatest rugby documentary ever made” by Rugbypass. 

Kings From Queens: The Run DMC Story | First on Showmax | Binge on 23 May

Kings From Queens: The RUN DMC Story is the never-been-told story of the most influential rap group in the history of music, who recorded the first platinum rap album.  After a series of life-changing events and challenges, including the murder of their beloved DJ, Jam Master Jay, Rev Run and DMC reunite to tell their story and celebrate the genre of music they mainstreamed. 

Kings From Queens: The RUN DMC Story has a 100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Collider calling it “an emotionally satisfying trip down memory lane.”

Shadowland S1 | Binge from 20 May

Legendary documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger sends documentary teams across America to embed with subjects who have rejected mainstream narratives. These include a beloved rural Pennsylvania pizza shop owner facing twenty years in prison for her role in the January 6th riots, an anti-vaccine activist pushing a dangerous fake cure for Covid-19, and a mother divorcing her husband because she fears his beliefs put their children’s lives in danger. 

A deeply immersive six-part docu-series, Shadowland reveals how conspiracy theories have moved from the margins to the mainstream, exploring how people come to their beliefs, and what makes these theories so alluring.

Survivor S45 | Binge from 22 May

Five-time Emmy Award-winning host Jeff Probst once again welcomes 18 new castaways to the idyllic Mamanuca Islands in Fiji for Season 45 of Survivor, the mega-successful grand-daddy of reality competition shows.

Now in its 24th year, the show has won seven Emmys and continues to deliver the drama as contestants are stranded in a remote location with little more than the clothes on their back.

This season’s line-up of castaways includes singer-songwriter J Maya and Season 44 returnee Bruce Perreault.

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City S4 | First on Showmax | Thursdays from 2 May

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City peeks into the unconventional personal and professional lives of successful women navigating an ultra-exclusive social circle in Salt Lake City, Utah, a city where religion, status and perfection are praised to the highest degree.

This show is no stranger to controversy, with one cast member fired from the show for her insensitive social media posts and another now serving a six-and-a-half-year sentence in jail for wire fraud. 

Season 4 is off to a salty start as the housewives dig up old feuds and start new rivalries, leading up to a shocking betrayal. We’re Here S4 | First On Showmax | Binge from 24 May 

HBO’s Emmy, Peabody, and GLAAD award-winning unscripted series We’re Here brings back Sasha Velour, Priyanka, Jaida Essence Hall, and Latrice Royale to continue the show’s mission of spreading love and connection across small-town America through the art of drag. 

This season, the queens work with participants in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Tulsa, Oklahoma, as well as in surrounding towns, while taking an in-depth, immersive look at recent anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and the effect it has had on the community.

Dragons: The Nine Realms S2 | First on Showmax | Binge from 1 May

The Emmy-nominated animated adventure series Dragons: The Nine Realms is set in the modern world, 1 300 years after the events of the original movie How To Train Your Dragon.

Here, dragons are just a legend, until a geological anomaly opens up a fissure in the Earth’s surface. But it’s not long before a group of misfit kids uncovers the truth about dragons and where they’ve been hiding – and pledges to protect what they’ve discovered.

Boasting a 4/5-star rating on Common Sense Media, where it’s recommended for kids aged 8+ (and their parents!), the show’s second season brings us 26 new high-adventure episodes, and young fans will be thrilled to know there are plenty more on the way.
