Giving it a rare 5/5-star review, The Guardian headlined, “Julianne Moore has ludicrously good fun in 17th-century raunchfest,” saying, “This audacious drama has poisonings by prune, lesbian affairs, murders, orgies – and a family so monstrous they make the Borgias look like the Waltons. It is magnificent… [and] more fun than I can possibly tell you.”

After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter, Astrid, accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

Directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman), Better Man’s central character is played by Jonno Davies (Hunters) and voiced by Williams. The motion capture is by Wētā Workshop and Wētā Digital, who created Caesar in Planet of the Apes and Gollum in The Lord of the Rings.

Rotten Tomatoes’ fourth best-reviewed horror of 2024, Late Night with the Devil takes us to 1977 and a Halloween talk show special like no other, one that will either resuscitate Johnny Carson rival Jack Delroy’s ailing ratings, or unleash evil into the living rooms of America ….

As Stephen King himself tweeted, “It’s absolutely brilliant. I couldn’t take my eyes off it.”

Trap | Stream from Thursday, 24 July

M Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense) is back with Trap, starring Josh Hartnett (Oppenheimer) as a father who treats his teen daughter to a pop concert, where they realise they’re at the centre of a dark and sinister event.

Common Sense Media recommends the movie for ages 7+.

Documentaries

The ABC Killer Original | Binge from Tuesday, 22 July

In 1995, journalist Tamsen de Beer was working the night shift at The Star newspaper when she got a call from someone claiming to be South Africa’s most prolific serial killer.

The kind of serial killer who would go on to be convicted of 38 murders and 40 rapes – all committed in the space of just over a year, in broad daylight, while sober.

“He was our Ted Bundy,” says director Jasyn Howes. The ABC Killer is his second series in a row for Showmax about a 90s serial killer. The first, Boetie Boer, about Stewart Wilken, was nominated at last year’s SAFTAs for Best Documentary Series and Best Editor (Jaco Laubscher, who also cut The ABC Killer).

Alongside re-enactments filmed in the actual locations where the events took place, Night Shift features interviews with Tamsen, South Africa’s first profiler Micki Pistorius, and former detectives Ettiene “Vinyl” Viljoen, Frans van Niekerk, and Paul Nkomo, among others.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story | Stream from Friday, 25 July

Christopher Reeve’s definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman set the benchmark for the superhero cinematic universes. Reeve portrayed the Man of Steel in four Superman films, before being injured in a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralysed from the neck down. After becoming a quadriplegic, Reeve became a charismatic leader and activist in the quest to find a cure for spinal cord injuries, as well as a passionate advocate for disability rights and care – all while continuing his career in cinema in front of and behind the camera and dedicating himself to his beloved family.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story has won over 30 awards, including Best Documentary Award at the 2025 BAFTAs and six Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards. The feature documentary has a 98% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with The Hollywood Reporter calling it, “a powerful story of human endurance.”

Last Call : When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York | Binge from Thursday, 10 July

In the early 1990s, with homophobia and hate crimes on the rise as the Aids crisis worsened, a serial killer preyed on gay men in New York City, infiltrating the city’s vibrant queer nightlife to find his victims.

Rotten Tomatoes’ best-reviewed docuseries of 2023, this HBO documentary miniseries is a gripping investigative crime story that delves into how deep-rooted biases in the criminal justice system, the media and the public’s perception of the victims undermined the investigation and enabled a brutal killer to prey on a marginalised community.

Last Call has a coveted 100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In their five-star review, The Guardian hailed it as “a masterclass in righteous, savvy TV.”

The Americas S1 | Binge from Thursday, 17 July

Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks narrates The Americas, from the Emmy-winning producers of Planet Earth and Blue Planet.

The documentary series employs revolutionary filmmaking technology to showcase the wonders, secrets and fragilities of the Americas – Earth’s largest landmass and the only one to stretch between both poles.

Filmed over five years, The Americas has an 86% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As the Hollywood Reporter says, “The photography is astonishing. You’re bound to learn something … And provided you root for the cute, baby animals over the gnarly predators, your heart is likely to be lifted three to five times per episode.”

The Nazi Cartel | First on Showmax | Binge from Thursday, 10 July

Fresh from its world premiere in competition at CannesSeries 2025, The Nazi Cartel is set in 1980, when a notorious Nazi and a Narco overthrew the Bolivian government and established the first cocaine state, paving the way for figures like Pablo Escobar and the drug cartels of today.

The three-part documentary centres on three men: notorious Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie; Roberto Suarez, a Bolivian businessman who controlled 90% of the world’s cocaine trade at the time; and DEA undercover agent Michael Levine, who sought to expose and destroy them.

“The Nazi Cartel highlights an unknown connection between Nazism and drug trafficking, at a time when we wish both would be nothing but closed chapters in our history books,” says CannesSeries. “Through unprecedented testimonies and powerful historical reminders, this is a series that is as informative as it is chilling.”

Music Box: Yacht Rock: A DOCKumentary | Stream from Friday, 18 July

Yacht Rock: A DOCKumentary chronicles the rise, fall, and rise again of soft rock. Retroactively dubbed “Yacht Rock”, the easy-listening genre came to be gently mocked and even dismissed by rock lovers and critics. Dubbed “perfect sitting-down dancing music” by Questlove, it has reclaimed its place in music history and is celebrated in this groove-infused film.

Yacht Rock features conversations with the likes of Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Michael McDonald (Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers), Steve Porcaro, Steve Lukather and David Paich (Toto), Prince Paul (De La Soul), Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson (The Roots), Mac DeMarco and comedian Fred Armisen.
