Hacks S4 | First on Showmax | Binge from Friday, 6 June 

The reigning Best Comedy Series at the Emmys, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, Hacks is back for a fourth season, with Deborah and Ava working to get their late-night show off the ground and make history doing it.

As legendary comedian Deborah Vance, Jean Smart has won the Best Actress Emmy every season, while Hannah Einbinder won Best Supporting Actress at this year’s Critics Choice Awards. 

Season 4 has a 97% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As The Guardian says, “Season 4 of Hacks is very funny. But what makes it really special is just how raw it is, too, ready to hit you in the feels when you least expect it.”

Iyanu S1 | Showmax Original | Binge from Friday, 13 June on Showmax 

Drawing on Nigerian culture, music, and mythology, Iyanu follows a brave young orphan living in the magical kingdom of Yorubaland. While studying history and ancient arts, she yearns for a normal life – until a looming threat awakens divine powers not seen since the legendary Age of Wonders. Accompanied by newfound friends Biyi and Toye, as well as a magical leopard named Ekun, Iyanu sets out to uncover the source of this evil, unlocking her destiny along the way
 
The animated series is adapted from Nigerian creator Roy Okupe’s popular graphic novel series, Iyanu: Child of Wonder, published by Dark Horse Comics, the powerhouse behind the likes of The Umbrella Academy and Hellboy comics. 
 
Award-winner Serah Johnson leads the all-African voice cast as Iyanu, alongside African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) winner and Vogue US cover star Adesua Etomi-Wellington, three-time AMAA nominee Stella Damasus, multi-award-winner Blossom Chukwujekwu, and Shaffy Bello from The Black Book, described by Wired as “Nigeria’s first runaway Netflix hit.”  

Iyanu is produced by Lion Forge Entertainment, the Emmy-winning company behind the Oscar®-winning Hair Love. Story editor Brandon Easton (Transformers: War for Cybertron; Marvel’s Agent Carter) headed the Iyanu writers’ room, which also featured Emmy winner Kerri Grant (Doc McStuffins; Ada Twist, Scientist).

Screenrant hails it as “The Last Airbender and Black Panther hybrid you didn’t know you needed.”

Since its US launch in April 2025, Iyanu ranked as the #1 series on Cartoon Network and in the top 10 kids and family series on Max. 

Lioness S2 | Binge from Friday, 20 June 

Zoe Saldaña won the 2024 Critics Choice Super Award for Best Actress: Action for her performance in Lioness as Joe McNamara, the leader of an undercover all-women US special ops team dedicated to befriending the wives, girlfriends or daughters of high-value terrorist targets and working to turn them for the CIA. 
 
The hit series also stars Oscar winners Morgan Freeman and Nicole Kidman, alongside four-time Emmy nominee Michael Kelly (Hank Stamper in House of Cards).

In Season 2, as the CIA’s fight against terror moves closer to home, Joe, Kaitlyn and Byron enlist a new Lioness operative to infiltrate a previously unknown threat.

Een Keer Om Die Son follows the lives of a family over the course of a calendar year, charting their ups and downs when tragedy strikes and everything changes overnight. 

Already renewed for a second season, the kykNET drama series is co-created by Ivan Botha and DonnaLee Roberts, the team behind blockbusters like Pad Na Jou Hart and Vir Altyd.  

Silwerskerm winner Jacques Bessenger (Koek, Donkerbos) and four-time SAFTA nominee Jana Kruger co-star as neurosurgeon Ruan and his wife, Lani, alongside the likes of double SAFTA winner Deon Lotz, Silwerskerm winner Pierre van Pletzen, and Donnalee Roberts as Ruan’s sister Amé.

Doc S1 | Mondays from 9 June on Showmax and M-Net 

After a car accident, Dr Amy Larsen (Molly Parker from Deadwood, House of Cards) wakes up with no memory of the past eight years. 
 
Already renewed for a second season, Doc was Fox’s best series debut in more than five years, as well as Fox’s highest-rated and most-watched new drama this season. 

Doc is based on an Italian series, in turn inspired by a true story. Variety hails the “fascinating” medical drama as “a fresh depiction of an exceptional doctor deeply wounded by the trials of life but given a second chance to do things differently.”

The Equalizer S5 | Binge from Friday, 27 June

Oscar nominee Queen Latifah stars as single mom Robyn McCall, aka “The Equalizer”, an anonymous guardian angel who helps those with nowhere else to turn. 

The fifth and final season of the hit series comes with the prospect of love on the horizon for more than one of our favourite characters, if they can survive the return of an old enemy …

As McCall, Queen Latifah has been nominated for three Critics Choice Awards, four Black Reel Awards, four People’s Choice Awards and a BET Award, and won Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series at the 2025 Image Awards.

Mr Throwback S1 | Binge from Monday, 16 June 

Critics Choice nominee Adam Pally (Happy Endings) stars in Mr Throwback as a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer who seeks redemption by reuniting with his childhood teammate: NBA legend Stephen Curry, playing himself. 

Saturday Night Live’s Ego Nwodim co-stars in the mockumentary series, which has an 86% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Paste calls Mr Throwback “warm, resonant and funny”, saying Curry “proves that he can do more than, well, be one of the greatest athletes of this century. He’s funny, too.”

Tokyo Vice S2 | Binge from Monday, 23 June 

Based on the experiences of American journalist Jake Adelstein, Tokyo Vice takes us into Tokyo’s criminal underworld. In the second and final season, as Adelstein delves deeper, he discovers that danger lurks around every corner, putting his life and those close to him at risk. 

Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) stars as Adelstein. It has a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Vulture hailing the crime series as ”a must-watch for its riveting narrative and compelling character arcs, set against the vibrant backdrop of 1990s Tokyo.”

Binnelanders S14 | Binge from Tuesday, 3 June

Binnelanders S14 is now on Showmax

Set in the fictional Binneland Clinic in Pretoria, kykNET’s beloved medical drama delves into the lives of doctors and nurses, not to mention their families and patients, exploring both their professional and personal challenges. 

Season 14 won three SAFTAs last year, and at the 2024 Silwerskerm Awards, Hans Strydom, best known as At Koster in over 4000 episodes of Binnelanders, received the Lifetime Achievement Award. 

Funny Woman S2 | First on Showmax | Binge from Monday, 9 June 

Season 2 of Funny Woman returns Gemma Arterton (The King’s Man) to her role as Barbara Parker/Sophie Straw, a Blackpool beauty queen trying to make it as a comedian in London at the height of the Swinging Sixties.

After two decades as one of the world’s most beloved and enduring stage musicals, Wicked became one of the biggest movies of 2024, and the highest-grossing musical film adaptation of all time. The untold story of the witches of Oz was nominated for 10 Oscars this year, including Motion Picture of the Year, winning Best Costume Design and Production Design, as well as over 100 other awards. 

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were both nominated for Oscars, as Best Actress and Supporting Actress respectively. Erivo plays Elphaba, a young woman misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, while Grande plays her fellow wizarding student, Glinda. Also look out for Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, Emmy nominee Jonathan Bailey, and Oscar nominee Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz himself.  

Wall Street Journal hailed Wicked as “the most entertaining film of the year.” Part 2 is expected later this year. 

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 | First on Showmax | Stream from Friday, 27 June 

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 returns the world’s fastest, bluest, most-beloved hedgehog to our screens in his most thrilling adventure yet. 

This time, Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. The movie has an 85% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus says: “With a double helping of Jim Carrey’s antics and a quicksilver pace befitting its hero, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the best entry in this amiable series yet.”

Longlegs | Stream from Thursday, 12 June  

Longlegs follows FBI agent Lee Harker, whose pursuit of a serial killer uncovers a series of occult clues she must solve to end his terrifying killing spree. Scream queen Maika Monroe (It Follows) stars as Lee, with Nicolas Cage as the villain.
  
The highest-grossing independent movie of 2024, Longlegs has an 86% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where it was named it the #5 Best Horror Movie of 2024. AV Club says, “Longlegs will have you squirming – a triumph of tension and tone and pure nightmare fuel.”  

Speak No Evil | Stream from Monday, 9 June 

When an American family is invited to spend the weekend at the idyllic country estate of a charming British family they befriended on vacation, what begins as a dream holiday soon warps into a snarled psychological nightmare. BAFTA winner James McAvoy (Glass) leads the cast. 

From Blumhouse (Get Out), Speak No Evil was nominated for Best Thriller Film of 2025 from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. It has an 83% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, with Screen Rant hailing it as “one of 2024’s best horror movies.” 

Problemista | Stream from Thursday, 5 June 

Problemista centres on Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador who’s struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in New York City. As time runs out on his work visa, a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast becomes his only hope to stay in the country and realise his dream. 
 
Problemista is the feature debut of writer, director and star Julio Torres, a Peabody Award winner for Los Espookys and multiple Emmy nominee for his writing on Saturday Night Live. 
 
The stacked cast includes Oscar winner Tilda Swinton, alongside the likes of Isabella Rossellini, rapper RZA and Greta Lee (Past Lives).

Problemista has an 86% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where it was the second best-reviewed fantasy movie of 2024.

My Penguin Friend | Stream from Sunday, 8 June 

A sweeping family adventure, My Penguin Friend is a triumphant tale of friendship between a lonely father and a little lost penguin. Inspired by an incredible true story, My Penguin Friend introduces us to DinDim, a penguin rescued from an oil spill, who transforms the life of a heartbroken fisherman. They soon become unlikely friends, so bonded that even the vast ocean cannot divide them. 
 
French star Jean Reno (The Professional) leads the cast, alongside Adriana Barraza (Blue Beetle), who won the Actress Award for Film (Latino Cinema & Television) at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards Celebration of Cinema & Television for her role here.

My Penguin Friend has an 86% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “There’s something radical about the old-fashioned approach of My Penguin Friend,” says RogerEbert.com. “It’s an earnest, crowd-pleasing family film – nothing snarky or self-referential, no on-the-nose needle drops – just a sweet, beautifully-made movie that earns the emotion it’ll surely draw from its viewers.”

Magpie | Steam from Monday, 23 June

Magpie follows married couple Anette and Ben, whose lives begin to fracture when their daughter is cast alongside a glamorous movie star, Alicia. As Anette’s suspicions about Ben’s infatuation with Alicia intensify, their secrets and lies threaten to destroy them all. Daisy Ridley (aka Star Wars’ Rey) stars.

Adapted by Ridley’s husband Tom Bateman from her story, Magpie has an 83% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Collider hailing the stylish neo-noir thriller as “completely and utterly terrific … Daisy Ridley at her best.”

Goodrich | Stream from Monday, 23 June 

Sixty-year-old LA art dealer Andy Goodrich’s life is upended when his second wife checks herself into a 90-day rehab program, leaving him to care for their nine-year-old twins. Thrust into the world of modern parenthood, Goodrich leans on his daughter from his first marriage, Grace, as he learns to become the father she never had. 

Michael Keaton and Mila Kunis co-star as Andy and Grace. Goodrich has an 81% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Deadline calling this “heartfelt, funny and sweet” as well as “exceptionally smart and endearing,” warning there’ll be “no dry eyes in the house for this one.”

Sting | Stream from Thursday, 19 June  

Rebellious 12-year-old Charlotte finds a baby spider and keeps it as a secret pet, naming it Sting. But as Charlotte’s fascination with Sting increases, so does its size and appetite …  

From award-winning Australian horror director Kiah Roache-Turner, Sting stars Critics Choice nominee Alyla Browne (aka young Furiosa) and a giant spider created by New Zealand practical effects gurus Wētā Workshop, who worked on The Lord of the Rings films and The Hobbit. 

Sting won Best International Film at last year’s Golden Scythe Horror Awards. The Guardian calls the film a “spider horror with plenty of bite”, a “fun-filled terror yarn”, and a “taut shocker.”

DC’s animated Justice League trilogy Crisis on Infinite Earths is based on the legendary 1985-86 crossover comic book series by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez.

In Part Two, the Anti-Monitor (Ato Essandoh from X-Men: Dark Phoenix) is released into the DC Multiverse. When he begins to destroy the different Earths that compose it, the Monitor (Jonathan Adams, who voiced Ronan the Accuser in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series) must recruit heroes from across the Multiverse to fight back.

The hit reality show Date My Family is now in its 12th season on SA screens (with spin-offs in Zambia, Botswana, Uganda, Nigeria, Kenya and Mozambique!) and still helping singletons find love by sending them on dates with their potential partner’s family.  

Each episode sees a bachelor/bachelorette going on three dinner dates with the families and friends of potential partners at their homes. The bachelor or bachelorette then chooses who they will date based on which family impresses them the most, while the three potential partners are kept out of sight, watching all the action unfold on-screen in another room.

Chimp Crazy S1 | First on Showmax | Binge from Friday, 13 June 

From Tiger King director-producer Eric Goode, Chimp Crazy examines the complicated world of raising chimpanzees. It centres on former nurse-turned-exotic animal broker Tonia Haddix, who spends her days caring for animals in captivity. Her love for one chimpanzee in particular spins into a wild cat-and-mouse game that draws the attention of local authorities, animal rights group PETA, the press, and even actor Alan Cumming.

The four-part series drew over two million viewers in its first week of release and has an 86% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Calling the award-winning HBO documentary series a “jaw-dropping look at monkey love…[which] dives into the wild, salacious and dangerous world of people who have chimpanzees as pets,” The New York Times says, “Chimp Crazy is more textured than Tiger King, partly because of its closer attention to the plight of animals” but “… there’s an endless ‘OMG’ feeling to everything here.” 

All That Breathes | Stream from Thursday, 5 June 

Nominated for the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, All That Breathes follows two Muslim brothers who devote their lives to protecting the black kite, a majestic bird of prey essential to the ecosystem of New Delhi, which has been falling from the sky at alarming rates. Amid environmental toxicity and social unrest, the “kite brothers” spend day and night caring for the birds in their makeshift basement hospital.  

It has a 99% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with The LA Times hailing it as “extraordinary… maybe the most beautifully realized documentary in recent memory.” 

100 Foot Wave S3 | First On Showmax | Binge from Thursday, 5 June 

100 Foot Wave chronicles the adventures of big wave surfing legend Garrett McNamara, his wife Nicole, and their friends and fellow surfers in Nazaré, Portugal, as they push the boundaries of their sport and the limits of their minds and bodies. 
 
Season 2 was the most nominated documentary series at the Emmys, where it won Outstanding Cinematography for two years in a row.

The Stroll | Stream from Thursday, 26 June 

When director Kristen Lovell moved to New York City in the 1990s and began to transition, she was fired from her job. With so few options to earn money to survive, Kristen, like many transgender women of colour during this era, began sex work in an area known as “The Stroll” in the Meatpacking District of lower Manhattan.  

In The Stroll, Kristen and co-director Zackary Drucker trace the history of transgender sex workers there, from the 1970s to the early 2000s – experiences which led to the fight for transgender rights. 

The HBO documentary has a 95% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety calls the “personal, archive-driven doc” “a wonder”,  “poignant” and “thrillingly revisionist” – “a powerful piece of trans history-making, a document that feels wounded, lived in, and yet joyfully alive.”

1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed | Stream from Thursday, 5 June 

 
Through a series of insightful conversations, three-time Emmy winner W Kamau Bell explores the experiences of mixed-race kids and their families in the Bay Area. 

Inspired by Kamau and his wife Melissa’s own desire to better understand what life is like for their mixed daughters, the film explores how multiracial kids (and their loved ones) navigate issues of identity in a world that often asks them to pick a side. With humour and heart, 1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed reveals the joys and complexities of growing up mixed race in today’s America, opening the door for more dialogue around race, culture, and identity.

 Striking with Pride | First on Showmax | Stream from Wednesday, 4 June 

Striking with Pride: United at the Coalface explores the unlikely alliance forged between London’s queer community and the striking miners of South Wales, between the 1984 and 1985 London Prides. 

Made famous by the 2014 BAFTA award-winning film Pride, this is one of the most unexpected and uplifting love stories ever, not between two people, but between two communities who – seemingly worlds apart – found common cause and compassion for each other in the face of immense challenges. 

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK finalist Tayce narrates, telling the powerful tale to a group of children in a playful and poignant story time session, which highlights the lasting impact this story has had on communities 40 years on from the 1984/1985 Miners’ Strike.
