5 Nigerian on-screen couples who had us screaming “God, when?!”

February is not an easy time for single pringles, whose only plan for Valentine’s Day might involve watching videos of cute couples online from the comfort of their desks, crying “God, when?!”, and then calling it a day.

Speaking of loving couples, here are five of the most adorable Nigerian on-screen couples who had us screaming “God, when?!”.

Romanus and Mabel (Ghana Jollof)

Don’t we all want a love that will defy all odds to be with us? That Shakespearean type of love in all its poetic glory?

That’s the love between Romanus (Akah Nnani) and Mabel (Jacinta Ocansey) and we cannot get enough of them in the Showmax Original Ghana Jollof.

Romanus, with the help of his friend Jasper, moves to Ghana in search of greener pastures. On his first night out in Ghana, he meets the beautiful Mabel and is immediately smitten.

In spite of her father’s aversion to Nigerian men and his numerous attempts at thwarting their budding relationship, Mabel remains true to Romanus.

Romanus also runs the risk of being homeless and losing his friendship with his benefactor Kweko because of this relationship. Apparently, Kweko and Mabel have a history but Romanus is not letting this get in the way of his love for her.

Though their love is constantly tested, these on-screen love birds are stuck to each other like glue.

God when!

Damini and Bimpe (Tinsel)

The couple set the internet ablaze when news of their engagement hit

Not only are these two absolutely beautiful to look at, their chemistry both on-screen and off-screen is electric.

In the multiple-award-winning series Tinsel, Damini (Ibrahim Suleiman) was initially Bimpe’s (Ihuoma Ejiofor) boss before they became on-screen lovers.

They help each other navigate difficult situations both in their career and personal lives as the plot develops, and we can’t help ourselves from “awww-ing” and “God when-ing”.

This romance couldn’t be contained to the big screen and the pair soon became an item off-screen as well.

They set the internet ablaze with their adorable pre-wedding photos and we were all so excited to see that one of our favourite on-screen couples would become a couple in real life.

The pair have been married for four years and have the most beautiful baby boy!

God of the single, please come through for us too.

Emeka and Asabe Anyanwu (Edge of Paradise)

If you are a 90s baby who grew up in Nigeria, you probably watched the M-Net hit series Edge of Paradise

The series follows the daily lives of the Anyanwu family, their wins and struggles both as individuals and as a family.

In this listicle, we are casting the spotlight on the relationship between Emeka and Asabe, the parents of the Anyanwu household.

Reminiscing over how Asabe used to look at Emeka and call him “sweetand their cute little arguments that were always resolved with a hug or a kind conversation, has us feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

These two embody the kind of love one grows old with and while it lacked the fierce intensity of new love, it possessed the maturity that can only be acquired from spending years together. You know what they say about fine wine? It gets better with each passing year.

We may not have appreciated the value of their relationship then, but we certainly do now.

Emeka and Teni (Battleground)

Emeka and Teni from the Africa Magic telenovela Battleground had Twitter in a frenzy.

This couple was nicknamed Tenka, a combination of the names Teni and Emeka, because their on-screen chemistry was palpable and had us all rooting for team #Tenka.

Dr Emeka is the son of Teni’s father’s physician, who recently returned from abroad to join his father’s medical practice. Dr Emeka’s return ignites old feelings in Teni, leading to an uncomfortable love triangle between himself, Teni and her fiancée.

Emeka and Teni had one of the most engaging and complex Nigerian on-screen relationships as they had to deal with numerous obstacles especially from Teni’s parents and fiancé.

A love like this that prevails against all odds is definitely one for the books.

King Zamani and Halita (Halita)

The relationship between Halita and King is such a beautiful Northern love story.

It’s the classic story of a Prince Charming (in this case, King) falling in love with a peasant, but it definitely had us appealing to Cupid for our own love interests.

Set in Northern Nigeria, the telenovela follows the life of a brilliant young lady, Halita, who is forced into servitude in order to send money home when her mother, Rebecca, takes ill.

She is promised a job as a secretary but she ends up in the Zamani home as domestic help.

King is the level-headed first son of the Zamani household who takes interest in Halita, who is unfairly disliked by the other members of his family.

King and Halita had the sort of relationship that nurtures one into the best version of themselves. The way King was always willing to defend Halita from his family, or how he listened and encouraged every one of her dreams even though they may have seemed unattainable at the time, was wonderful to watch. It was the kind of love that believes in you and pushes you to be better. God, when, ohhh?!

Catch all of these lovers in the month of love – or anytime you need a dose of romance – on Showmax.
