Devina from The Mommy Club: Sugar & Spice tells us about the show
The Mommy Club: Sugar & Spice follows nine of KwaZulu-Natal's most affluent mothers as they balance motherhood, marriage and their careers. Here, Devina tells us about being a reality star in her own words.
Which of the ladies do you gravitate towards the most?
Truth is, I gravitated towards Lenore and Abigail. Lenore because we actually both grew up in the same area as children, and our memories drew us to one another.
We also have the same sense of humour and a sturdy moral compass. We immediately clicked and I felt like we knew each other our whole lives within a few days.
Abi and I have kids around the same age and we also have similar parenting styles and she is an academic so I gravitated towards her because we have the same interests and our days are eerily similar. Also, she enjoys having a laugh and is so reasonable and level-headed. I can relate to Abi so I loved being in her company.
How was your first day filming?
It was daunting, I didn't know what to expect and I was insanely nervous. My kids were with me and were excited little Energizer bunnies. So mom-mode was on in full swing so I honestly just went with the flow like a robot, i took instructions and tried to ignore the cameras and be natural, but I struggled that first day.
Seeing, meeting and talking to the other moms was lovely but also I felt I didn't fit in, so that made me feel awkward the entire first shoot. I was stressed because I still had my business to run, work to do, and I had to get home and prepare dinner and sort out homework. That first shoot taught me a lot about the ins and outs of filming a single scene.
Which of the ladies are different on- and off-camera and how are they different?
Honestly every lady on the show is genuinely themselves on camera. As you see them on the screen is how they are off camera.
What's the biggest lesson you learned about yourself while filming?
I was very ill throughout filming, so I learnt that I can persevere and do what needs to done no matter how impossible it may seem. Filming was not easy because our real lives continued as normal with this additional aspect.
I learned that I can jump over every hurdle and juggle all the daily tasks thrown at me if I just put my mind to it. I learned never to give up no matter how uncomfortable a situation may be and to enjoy every moment of an unbelievable opportunity.
How do people treat you now that you’re on a TV show?
The weirdest thing is that people recognise me and are excited to see me and treat me like someone whose achievements are recognised. Some people just stare at me like they are trying to place where they know me from, this is hilarious and when they realise who I am a few people come up and say the nicest things and bombard me with questions about the show. Some people give me a commentary about theshow like they need me to hear what they think about it.
In your opinion, which of your cast mates are sugar and which ones are spice?
- Asharia: definitely sugar
- Resh and Losh: sugar most of the time but the spice is there
- Christina: spice for sure
- Kim: sugar but she can be spicy if the circumstance calls for it
- Lenore: sugar and spice because she is all about balance
- Neetasha: 100% sugar
- Abigail: sugary sweet
