Can Liverpool win this year’s Premier League title?

Liverpool's meteoric rise to the top of the Premier League table has ignited excitement among fans and pundits alike. After 11 games, Arne Slot's side has secured nine victories, one draw, and just one defeat, establishing a commanding five-point lead over defending champions Manchester City.

The Reds' recent dominance has been further amplified by City's surprising loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.

With a crucial clash against Manchester City looming in the next two weeks, Liverpool has the opportunity to extend their lead to a substantial eight points before the Christmas break.

However, while Liverpool's current form is undeniably impressive, the Premier League is a notoriously unpredictable league.

Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, with their wealth of experience and tactical acumen, cannot be counted out. They have a history of clawing their way back from seemingly insurmountable deficits to clinch titles.

Arsenal, too, have emerged as strong contenders, eager to end their long wait for a Premier League trophy. Their consistent performances and youthful exuberance make them a formidable force.

As the season unfolds, the question remains: Can Liverpool maintain their momentum and secure the Premier League title?

To gain insights into this, we sought the opinions of South Africa's seasoned sports journalists.

Liverpool can definitely go all the way and win the title. It’s incredible how Arne Slot has come in and taken the team to new heights, despite not doing much in the transfer market. Defensively, Liverpool are solid and a strong back four can go a long way in inspiring a club to the title. It is often said that strikers can win you games, but defenders can win you leagues.

Upfront, Mo Salah is in good form at the moment and his experience can inspire them to success. He may not have his former co-stars Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané upfront, but Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez can play an important role in chipping in when Liverpool needs them the most. They would probably need to go into the market in January to add to their squad, to handle the load of playing in different competitions.

I certainly think Liverpool can go all the way. A five point lead over second-placed Man City heading into this November international break speaks volumes. Arne Slot is clearly a perfect fit for the team and elevated what they’re doing, while the likes of Mo Salah are playing out of their boots. Consistency will be key over the duration of the marathon season, but every sign so far suggests they are the worthy front-runners.

For a team that is in transition with a new coach making his bow in the Premier League, Liverpool have had a dream start. Arne Slot was fortunate to inherit a team Jürgen Klopp left for him. But it’s clear that he is imprinting his own signature, which has brought a different dimension in how the Reds approach matches.

Few would have bet on Liverpool being on the summit of both the Premier League and Champions League at this stage. That said, none of these competitions are won in November.

Byron David: radio presenter and football writer

Not many pundits and football fans have given Liverpool a chance of finishing in the top four let alone winning the Premier League. It wasn’t due to a lack of faith in the squad, but more about Jürgen Klopp being a tough act to follow for Arne Slot. However, after 11 games, it appears that Liverpool are more than serious contenders for the title this term.

They’ve been near flawless but for a shock home defeat to Nottingham Forest. With their nearest rivals Manchester City and Arsenal dropping points in recent weeks, it’s allowed the Merseysider’s to extend their lead at the summit to five points from City and nine points from the Gunners. While there’s still a long way to go, Liverpool are firm favourites now to give Slot a remarkable start to life in England.

Liverpool can absolutely win the league title. They look like a supremely confident team under Arne Slot. They’re playing at a level no other team is at the moment and they have players like Mohammed Salah who can make something happen out of nothing. It’ll be difficult for sides to beat them consistently, I can't see them dropping points too often.

John Goliath: digital journalist at IOL Sport

Liverpool look like the most polished team in the Premier League at the moment. The transition from Klopp to Slot has been seamless, with Liverpool playing that attacking style of football, but not leaving themselves vulnerable to the counter, as was the problem under Klopp. The fact their rivals have struggled to cope with injuries have seen them pull away at the top. If they can continue to stay injury free, they will definitely be in with a chance. However, we know City have that end of season run in them when they have a fully fit squad. So Liverpool must capitalise while City and Arsenal are still struggling.
