Wura episodes 5-8 recap: Femi is playing with fire

Episodes 5-8 of Wura provide insight into her mastery of pretence and living a lie, and consequently indicates how dangerously two-faced she is. Think about it, so many things about this woman are contradictory: she grew up poor but now acts all too bougie; she is a loving mother yet a ruthless CEO; she is wealthy yet a miser.

The show’s writers are taking us on a ride with the character, slowly peeling the layers to reveal what is inside, even though each reveal poses more questions. The aforementioned scene happens during dining. Labake, her maid, apologises to the family for coming late, stating her home was broken into and ransacked by criminals.

Wura immediately goes to her to offer comfort. She then promises her a new house, away from the less-secured neighbourhood Labke currently lives in with her son, Femi. Her family is stunned; it is out of nowhere. Later in the episode, she tells Labake it is a well-deserved gift that should have come before now.

If you are unfamiliar with the character, you would think this is an act of benevolence, but it is just another show of Mrs Adeleke’s deceit. She is promising the house because she is behind the ransacking and must pacify and meet the demands of Labake’s son, who is blackmailing her for killing Pa Kuti.

But given human’s propensity to see the good in others, we might be forced to think there is some good in Wura. That all of these isn’t a show. After all, she could easily kill Femi, just as Jeje wants. Instead, she is succumbing to his ever-increasing demands. A house. A supervisory role at the mine. And now, he wants a percentage of the company—a request which might force her hand.

But for now, she is holding onto righteousness. She won’t kill Labake’s son; it is too close to home. Or maybe, she is really a good person masquerading to be villainous. In Monday’s episode, we see a genuine version of her when she and her husband reminisce on the early days when she was hungry and stuck, and he was just a young officer.

“Tony, I wouldn’t have done this without you,” she says to him as he commends her current position. “I wouldn’t have been the woman I am today if you didn’t take me to school and pay for my education. Sometimes, I wonder: why me?”

He replies earnestly, telling her it wasn’t just her beauty that caught his eyes; the fire in her also caught his attention. It is this burning desire that makes her ambitious and has pushed her to the top, but it is also what makes her dangerous and duplicitous.
