10 Afrikaans movies to stream now
Afrikaans cinema is gaining traction like never before. Fresh from its sold‑out premiere at Silwerskermfees last month, Khaki Fever landed on Showmax with the biggest opening weekend of any Afrikaans film in the platform’s history.
Whether you're in the mood to revisit the globally acclaimed Toorbos – which was South Africa’s official submission to the 2021 Oscars – or you're keen to dive into something fresh like Die Bloedhonde, a Silwerskerm darling from last year, or the quirky and offbeat Stiekyt, there's something here for everyone.
Let’s take a closer look at the must-see Afrikaans movies lighting up the screen right now.
1. Khaki Fever (2025)
A raunchy, South African comedy. A group of rangers working on a private game farm challenge each other to see who can have sex with the most tourists during the holiday season. The 18SNL comedy is the second comedy from director Brett Michael Innes, building on the success of Daryn’s Gym, which competed at Rotterdam. Innes has won the SAFTA for Best Film twice, for Sink and Fiela Se Kind, and wrote this year’s Silwerskerm Audience Prize winner My F*k Marelize and produced the Best Film winner, The Heart Is A Muscle.
SAFTA nominee Christopher Japhta gets top billing as Daniel, with Francois Jacobs stealing the show, and his first Silwerskerm award, as Albie. Liam Bosman and Ilse Klink were also nominated for Khaki Fever at Silwerskerm.
2. Toorbos (2019)

Toorbos is a lyrical Afrikaans drama set in 1930s Knysna, where forest-dwelling Karoliena (Elani Dekker) is pulled into town life after marrying Johannes (Stiaan Smith). Torn between freedom and conformity, she must choose between the natural world she loves and the structured life expected of her.
Directed by René van Rooyen and based on Dalene Matthee’s novel, the film was South Africa’s official submission to the 2021 Oscars and premiered internationally at the Torino Film Festival. Praised for its lead performance and visual beauty, Toorbos continues to shine as a highlight of modern Afrikaans cinema.
3. Gebokste Liefde (2025)
Having paid her dues as assistant director to the late advertising legend Keith Rose, Annelize Frost makes her feature film directorial debut with the knockout Showmax Original romcom Gebokste Liefde.
SAFTA winner Tarryn Wyngaard stars as divorced single mom Suma-Lee. When she’s fired from her job as a fashion designer, she reluctantly joins a boxing gym, where she finally finds the courage to stand up for herself and fight for what she wants: love.
4. Soos Pynappel Op Pizza (2025)
Waldo and Becca have exactly three things in common. They are both chefs. They are both single. And they both equally dislike each other. When they end up at a wacky singles retreat in the mountains, fate keeps dumping them headfirst, together, into one crazy scenario after the other, forcing them to reexamine what they think they know about love.
SAFTA winner Schalk Bezuidenhout and SAFTA nominee Kate Pinchuck co-star in Afrikaans and English respectively.
5. Horisonne (2023)
Melissa, a psychologist, learns that her ex-lover, Melchior van Staden, has set up Horisonne, a mindfulness estate where he seems to be brainwashing young men and women, spiritually and psychologically. She’s even more concerned when she discovers that her 18-year-old daughter, Adri, whom she had given up for adoption, is now the cult leader’s right-hand woman. Going to the estate herself, she risks her life to save her daughter from Melchior's power.
The eerie psychological thriller stars SAFTA winner Elma Postma as Melissa opposite former Boo! frontman Chris Chameleon as Melchior, reuniting the two stars 17 years after their bittersweet romantic storyline on 7de Laan as Dezi and Liam.
6. Eksie Perfeksie (2024)
After impulsively moving in with his girlfriend, who he barely knows, André finds out that Dalene is still friends with all of her ex-boyfriends. Intimidated by their presence, André tries to befriend them, only to discover that all of Dalene’s relationships follow the same pattern.
Pietie Beyers and Emma van Heyn co-star, with singer Bobby van Jaarsveld and former Mister World South Africa Sean van Noordwyk as just two of Dalene’s many exes.
7. Die Bloedhonde (2024)
While camping with her family, Katrien starts to suspect that the beloved local dominee might be responsible for an apparent suicide at the resort. With a middle-aged drifter as her only ally, she throws everything into the battle to prove the church, the community and her own family wrong.
SAFTA nominees Elani Dekker and Tobie Cronjé star as Katrien and dominee Lukas respectively, with Waldemar Schultz as the drifter.
8. Stiekyt (2022)

Stiekyt is the story of an actor, James (Paul du Toit), who secretly moonlights at a failing drag club. After being caught red-handed by his wife, he has to fight for his marriage as well as deliver the performance of his life to avert suspicion regarding the mysterious death of a colleague.
Produced by Homebrew Films for kykNET, Stiekyt had its international premiere at the prestigious PÖFF | Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia.
9. Noem My Skollie (2016)

A young man ends up in a Cape Town prison in the 1960s. He uses his talent as a storyteller to protect himself from the gangs in the prison. Based on the real-life story of screenwriter John W Fredericks (called AB in the film), Noem My Skollie is set on the Cape Flats and in Pollsmoor Prison, and is Daryne Joshua's directorial debut.
10. Matilda & Matthys (2024)
In Matilda & Matthys, an ambitious young writer and a super-rational tech entrepreneur go on a series of fake dates as research for their novel and their dating app algorithm respectively. But even the smartest people can’t outsmart love.
Matilda & Matthys stars Emma van Heyn and Adrian Steyn in the title roles, opposite the likes of Bertha le Roux-Wahl, Pietie Beyers and comedian Mojak Lehoko.
