First-look trailer for epic Showmax Original drama Kabiyesi

African streamer Showmax has released the first-look trailer for its upcoming Nigerian Original series, Kabiyesi, which premieres 14 February 2025. New episodes will be available every Friday.

This epic drama is a tale of tradition, personal ambition and a princess’s struggle for power amid a wave of political change inspired by the true story of the reign of Orompoto, the only female Alaafin of Oyo, who ruled the empire in the 16th Century.

The story begins with Princess Aderiyife of Oyo-Ile, the only daughter of King Adegoke, who is engaged to be married to Prince Obabamiji of Igboho. Everything is on track for her to embrace her destiny until a devastating betrayal and a series of tragic events bring her face to face with the perils and pitfalls of being in a position of power.

Faced with agonising choices, Aderiyife embarks on a perilous path where every decision she makes is critical to secure her family’s future and the future of Oyo-Ile, while she’s surrounded by enemies - both within and outside the kingdom. She’s forced to go above and beyond what is expected of her as princess to become the leader that Oyo-Ile desperately needs.

Showrunner Seyi Babatope, sharing his excitement on the series, said, "Creating Kabiyesi has been a deeply rewarding journey. This story isn't just about royalty – it's about human ambition, love, and the personal cost of leadership. We're bringing a unique and powerful narrative that celebrates the richness of African storytelling, and I can't wait for audiences to experience it.”

The series stars rising Nollywood talent Annetta Adebusuyi (Beckma, official selection at AFRIFF 2022) as Princess Aderiyife, a bold and determined woman trying to find her place in the world. Nollywood heavyweight Akin Lewis (Over the Bridge, the top-nominated movie at AMVCA 2024) plays Oba Adegoke, the wise and caring King of Oyo-Ile, while Amokun Ibrahim is Prince Obabamiji, Aderiyife’s devoted suitor. Patrick Diabuah (Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti) takes on the role of Bashorun, a cunning and ambitious man who dreams of taking the throne for himself.

Other key characters are Queen Adelewa, a traditional mother who wants the best for her daughter, portrayed by Oluwakemi Oladeojo, and Adetoro, a man consumed by bitterness and revenge, played by Olajide Ibitoye. Kabiyesi also stars other talented actors like Olanrewaju Ayanwale, Jibola Dabo, and Hauwa Angela Issa who bring this royal drama to life.

Kabiyesi is set to take viewers on a journey of love, sacrifice, and ambition as Princess Aderiyife battles to save her people while facing intense challenges that threaten her future and the kingdom’s peace.

Kabiyesi premieres 14 February 2025, exclusively on Showmax with new episodes every Friday.
