Kim from The Mommy Club: Sugar & Spice on being “the observer”
We sat down with Kim from Showmax Original reality series The Mommy Club: Sugar & Spice to find out what it was like filming the show while she was eight months pregnant, and the spice or sweetness she sees in her fellow cast members. Stream new episodes on Thursdays on Showmax.
What was your first impression of all the ladies?
I remember walking down the stairs of the baby shower and thinking wow, all these ladies showed up for me, I think I was impressed by the glitz, style and glamour that all the women possessed. collectively.
Meeting the twins was like seeing double but I felt an instant connection to them that was unwavering. I did think Devina was only a friend of Abigail and didn’t know she was a part of The Mommy Club mamas. I definitely heard Christina before I met her! I loved Asharia’s outfit and noticed Lenore’s hairstyle. She was a familiar face from yoga.
Watching the episodes, is there anything you would like to clarify?
I was eight months pregnant when we shot the show – so a huge part of my mental health and state of being was solely based on keeping the little baby inside of me stress- and anxiety-free. I was a great observer of the mums and took things into consideration before being “reactive” – choosing response and an application of thought. I definitely think that affected how I would naturally respond to certain situations.
How was your first day filming?
Nerve-wracking! I think my water almost broke a few times, but I think it’s part and parcel of show business. After about four shoots you get more comfortable. I had no idea about the workings of a reality TV production so I was “just happy to be there” but I feel after a few shoots I got a lot more comfy having to speak in front of the cameras.
Which of the ladies are different on and off camera and how are they different?
I think there are definitely mums who “put on a show” for the cameras. I definitely think some mums were more interested in my life on screen than in real life . Asharia being a new mum to Enzo wasn’t left with much time to connect with us off screen until only later on, which is very understandable- For me the twins were pretty much the same sans the initial on-screen nerves. Devina is a sweet soul on and off screen, and I think Abigail and Neetasha needed to showcase being politically correct and poised – much like myself!
The biggest lesson you learned about yourself while filming?
I learnt that I could do anything whilst being eight months preggy. I also learned that I am a lot more patient and accepting than I once believed.
How do people treat you now that you’re on a TV show?
It’s definitely mind boggling to be noticed everywhere I go. With being a new mama my focus is on my new arrival so I tend to forget about even being on the show. I do love it and love connecting with people who enjoy watching.
What can viewers expect in the upcoming episodes?
I think I am very much a ramped-up version of myself. I get a lot more comfy and connect more with the mums so I am naturally more myself. I command my space and just start loving the process of the show.
Which of your castmates are sugar and which ones are spice?
Neetasha – a spicy turmeric, mild but needed in every Indian dish.
Twins – cinnamon, flavourful, but too much and you get packed a punch.
Devina – sugar, sugar, sugar.
Abigail – sweetener, healthy sugar.
Lenore – definitely masala.
Christina – mother-in-law masala.
Asharia – sweet honey, natural and authentic.
Kim – a whole curry.
