Premier League 2024/25: Can Man City make it five in a row?
While it’s too early to predict who will be crowned Premier League champions in the 2024/25 season, all indicators point to yet another season of dominance by Pep Guardiola’s Man City.
They remain favourites to win the title and could make it five Premier League titles in a row.
This week, Showmax takes a look at the season ahead and what is expected from the “Big Six” teams in the league.
We also look at how the newly promoted teams could fare in the season ahead.
Man City’s reign: can they do it again?
Manchester City enter the 2024/25 Premier League season as the undisputed kings of English football. With a fourth consecutive title under their belt, Pep Guardiola’s side have set an unprecedented level of dominance. The question now is whether they can maintain their stranglehold on the league.
The Citizens boast a squad brimming with talent. Erling Haaland’s goal-scoring exploits have been nothing short of sensational, while the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, and Rodri provide the creative and defensive backbone. Guardiola’s tactical acumen is unparalleled, and his ability to extract the maximum from his players is evident in City’s relentless pursuit of perfection.
However, the challenge of maintaining such a high level of performance is immense. The relentless pressure to deliver trophies can take its toll, and the potential departure of key players could disrupt the team’s balance. Additionally, the rest of the league will be desperate to dethrone City, with clubs investing heavily in their squads to bridge the gap.
Arsenal, Liverpool, and potentially even Manchester United and Chelsea will be eager to challenge City’s supremacy. A slip-up or two could prove costly, as the chasing pack will be ready to capitalise on any opportunity.
Ultimately, whether Man City can achieve a historic fifth consecutive title will depend on their ability to sustain their extraordinary levels of performance while navigating the inevitable challenges that lie ahead. One thing is certain: the Premier League title race is far from over, and the battle for supremacy will be fiercely contested.
Arsenal: Can they go one better?
Arsenal’s near-miss in the 2023/24 Premier League season has left a bitter taste, but it also serves as a springboard for their title ambitions. Mikel Arteta has transformed the Gunners into a formidable force, capable of matching Manchester City blow for blow.
The core of the team remains intact, with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Martin Odegaard forming a potent attacking trio. The addition of key reinforcements can further strengthen their squad depth. If Arsenal can maintain their consistency, reduce errors, and potentially add a clinical finisher, they will undoubtedly be in the title race once again.
But the challenge is huge. Overcoming Manchester City’s dominance is no easy feat. Guardiola’s side have set an incredibly high bar, and Arsenal will need to find a way to consistently outperform them over 38 games. The pressure will be immense, and any slip-ups could prove costly.
Ultimately, Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League hinge on their ability to sustain their high level of performance, strengthen key areas of the squad, and capitalise on any opportunities that arise.
Liverpool’s new era under Arne Slot
Liverpool embark on a new chapter with Arne Slot at the helm, hoping to rediscover the winning formula that defined their recent era. Slot’s attacking philosophy aligns with Liverpool’s DNA, promising an exciting brand of football. His ability to develop young talent and implement a high-pressing system could rejuvenate the Reds.
However, the Premier League is a relentless competition, and rebuilding a squad while challenging for the title is no easy feat. Liverpool face stiff competition from Manchester City and Arsenal, who have set the benchmark in recent seasons .Key to Liverpool’s success will be their ability to strengthen the squad strategically, particularly in midfield.
While the potential for a quick return to the title race is there, a more realistic target might be securing a Champions League spot. Consolidating their position among the Premier League elite and building for long-term success should be the initial focus. The journey under Slot is undoubtedly filled with promise, but it will take time for the new manager to imprint his style and for the team to fully adapt.
Man United: Can they close the gap?
After the enormous success of his debut season, many expected Erik ten Hag to push on and re-establish Manchester United as a Premier League powerhouse. However, what followed was the worst-ever campaign in the club’s illustrious history.
United finished eighth in the Premier League table, eight points off the Champions League places and a staggering 31 behind champions Manchester City.
Despite the appalling campaign, United ended the 2023/24 season on a high, beating their local neighbours in the FA Cup final to clinch the title at Wembley Stadium.
That triumph somewhat spared Ten Hag’s blushes as it secured United a place in the Europa League, but the Dutchman’s future still hangs in the balance despite signing a contract extension earlier this month. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival signalled a new era for United. The INEOS chairman expressed his commitment to restoring the club to the pinnacle of domestic and continental football.
However, United’s primary objective next season would be to return to the Champions League, and anything less could spell trouble for Ten Hag.
United have been active in the transfer market, strengthening key areas of Ten Hag’s squad, so the Dutchman cannot afford a sluggish start to the season.
While competing for the Premier League title would be a bridge too far for Ten Hag next term, the board and fans will expect silverware in the domestic and Europa League competitions. New contract or not, the upcoming season could be make or break for Ten Hag’s future at the Theatre of Dreams.
Chelsea’s new era under Enzo Maresca
Chelsea enter the 2024/25 season with a fresh start under the stewardship of Enzo Maresca. The Italian tactician faces a daunting task of rebuilding a squad that has undergone significant changes in recent seasons. With a new manager and a squad in transition, expectations are tempered for the Blues.
While Chelsea possess undoubted talent, consistency has been an issue.
Maresca will need to instil a clear identity and playing style to galvanise the squad. Defensive solidity and attacking fluidity will be key areas of focus. The manager’s ability to nurture young talent and integrate new signings seamlessly will also be crucial.
A top-four finish should be the immediate goal for Chelsea. Challenging for the title might be a step too far in Maresca’s first season. However, with the right blend of experience and youth, coupled with shrewd recruitment, the Blues could potentially surprise.
Ultimately, the success of Maresca’s tenure will be measured by progress rather than immediate trophies. Building a sustainable foundation for future success is paramount. If Chelsea can establish themselves as a consistent top-four side and develop a clear identity, it will lay the groundwork for a return to the pinnacle of English football
Time for Ange’s Spurs to flourish
Tottenham Hotspur enter the new Premier League season with a sense of renewed optimism under the stewardship of Ange Postecoglou. The Australian manager has brought a fresh approach to the club, emphasising attacking football and high-energy pressing.
Key to Tottenham’s success will be the integration of new signings and the development of young talent.
The likes of James Maddison have already shown their quality, but consistency will be crucial.
While a top-four finish should be the immediate target, Spurs fans will be hoping to see their team compete for trophies in the coming seasons. Postecoglou’s philosophy aligns with the club’s ambitions, and with continued investment and development, Tottenham could become a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League.
Newly promoted teams: A tough road ahead
The three teams promoted to the Premier League for the 2024/25 season face a daunting task. The step up from the Championship is significant, and survival will be the primary objective.
Leicester City return to the topflight after a brief absence. With a core of experienced players and a proven manager, they have a better chance of staying up compared to the other two newcomers. However, the Premier League is a different beast, and they will need to adapt quickly.
Ipswich Town are back in the topflight after a long absence. They have a young, talented squad but lack Premier League experience. Building a team capable of competing at this level will be a challenge, and they could face a tough season.
Southampton were relegated last season but managed to bounce back through the playoffs. While they have Premier League experience, their recent struggles suggest they will need to significantly strengthen their squad to avoid another relegation battle.
Overall, the newly promoted teams face a challenging campaign. Survival should be the primary goal, and any points gained beyond that would be considered a bonus.
