Update: Spain are European champions!
The summer of 2024 will forever be etched in Spanish footballing folklore. After a dominant run, Spain secured their fourth UEFA European Championship title, etching their name in history as the first nation to achieve this feat.
Their victory wasn’t just about the trophy; it was a testament to their unwavering style, tactical brilliance, and sheer determination.
From the group stage onwards, Spain oozed confidence, winning every group stage game comfortably. And they continued to assert their dominance in the knockout phases of the tournament, defeating the likes of Georgia, Germany and France on their path to the final.
Their semi-final against France was a tactical masterclass. Luis de la Fuente’s men nullified the French attack, while Rodri, the heartbeat of the midfield, controlled the tempo with his trademark calmness. Coming back from a goal down, Spain asserted their authority on the game with two quick fire goals in the first half to cement their place in the final.
The final at the Olympiastadion Berlin was a tense affair with both teams playing to a stalemate in the first half.
But within a minute of the second half, Spain came out firing with an unbelievable move to set up a goal for the ever-threatening winger Nico Wiliams.
England then fought back with a timely goal from their substitute Cole Palmer to level matters, before Spain substitute Mikel Oyarzabal broke the hearts of millions of English football fans with a fine finish in the 86th minute to seal a historic victory at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
Spain’s triumph wasn’t just about the final scoreline. They played some of the most aesthetically pleasing football of the tournament.
Their possession-based approach, spearheaded by the young sensation Pedri, was a joy to watch. The emergence of 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, who became the youngest player ever to feature in a EURO final, was another exciting chapter in Spanish football’s rich history.
Yamal’s dazzling displays throughout the tournament earned him the Young Player of the Tournament award, while the ever-reliable Rodri, who dictated the midfield with his intelligence and passing range, was deservedly named Player of the Tournament.
England, despite a valiant effort, were simply outplayed on the day. Spain’s dominance throughout the tournament left no room for argument – they were the best team in Europe.
No other team possessed the combination of tactical nous, individual brilliance, and sheer hunger for victory that La Roja displayed.
This victory marked the culmination of a new era for Spanish football. A young, exciting generation, nurtured by the experience of veterans like Morata has arrived on the world stage with a bang. For Spain, this wasn’t just another trophy; it was a statement of intent. They are back at the summit of European football, and with this golden generation at the helm, their reign could well extend for years to come.

Lamine Yamal’s name will forever be etched in UEFA EURO 2024 history. The 17-year-old Spanish wonderkid wasn’t just a participant; he was a revelation, dazzling audiences with his electrifying performances and earning the prestigious Young Player of the Tournament award.
Yamal’s journey began with a bang. He became the youngest player ever to feature in the tournament’s opening match, breaking a record that stood for decades. His impact wasn’t limited to symbolic milestones. He showcased maturity beyond his years, playing with a confidence that belied his age. His dazzling footwork, pinpoint crosses, and knack for creating scoring opportunities quickly made him a fan favourite.
The highlight of Yamal’s tournament came in the semi-final against France. With Spain behind 1-0, he rose to the occasion, curling a wonder goal into the top corner. This strike not only secured a crucial victory for Spain but also made him the youngest ever scorer in a EURO semi-final.
Yamal wasn’t just about individual brilliance. He seamlessly integrated into Spain’s possession-based style, linking up beautifully with the likes of Nico Williams and Alvaro Morata. His defensive contributions were also commendable, showcasing a well-rounded skillset that promises an exciting future.
The Young Player of the Tournament award is a just reward for Yamal’s exceptional displays. He wasn’t just Spain’s future; he was a vital cog in their present success story. His performances offer a glimpse of a future where Spain will continue to dominate the international stage with a new generation of superstars leading the charge.
Lamine Yamal’s name may be new to many, but his performance at EURO 2024 has ensured it will be remembered for years to come. He is not just a young talent; he is a star in the making, and the world eagerly awaits his next chapter.
Player of the Tournament: Rodri
As the confetti rained down on the Olympiastadion Berlin pitch, one player stood out amidst the jubilant celebrations: Rodri.
The Spanish midfielder, a rock in the heart of Luis de la Fuente’s side, received the ultimate recognition – the Player of the Tournament award. It was a fitting tribute to a player whose influence transcended mere statistics.
Rodri’s impact wasn’t about flashy goals or dazzling dribbles. He was the silent conductor, the metronome dictating the rhythm of Spain’s dominant displays. His ability to control the tempo, recycle possession with pinpoint accuracy, and break down opposition attacks was simply unmatched.
Throughout the tournament, Rodri was a wall in front of the Spanish defence. He shielded his backline with unwavering positioning and timely tackles, stifling attacks before they could gain momentum. His calmness under pressure was infectious, allowing his teammates to play with a sense of freedom and confidence.
Games like the quarter-final against Germany and the semi-final against France truly showcased Rodri’s class. He neutralised the attacking threats of the likes of Mbappé, showcasing his tactical awareness and positional intelligence. Importantly, he did this without resorting to a single cynical foul, highlighting his discipline and composure.
Rodri’s influence extended beyond defensive duties. His intelligent passing range-initiated attacks, spraying diagonal balls that unlocked defences and created scoring opportunities. He was the link between Spain’s defence and attack, the engine that kept their possession-based game ticking.
While the likes of Lamine Yamal and Fabian Ruiz and stole the headlines with their goals, Rodri’s contribution was invaluable. He was the silent leader, the unsung hero who made everyone around him look better.
The Player of the Tournament award was a testament to his exceptional work ethic, tactical brilliance, and unwavering leadership. With Rodri at the helm, Spain can look forward to a bright future, one built on his unique brand of quiet dominance.
Top goal scorer
Dani Olmo
Six players finished top of the Alipay+ Top Scorer rankings at UEFA EURO 2024, with the Netherlands’ Cody Gakpo, England’s Harry Kane, Germany’s Jamal Musiala, Georgia’s Georges Mikautadze, Spain’s Dani Olmo and Slovakia’s Ivan Schranz all scoring three goals.
Spain’s triumphant EURO 2024 campaign saw a wealth of individual brilliance, and Dani Olmo was no exception.
While the headlines focused on the trophy and young stars like Yamal, Olmo quietly delivered in the final third, finishing as joint top scorer with three goals.
Olmo’s goals may not have come in the most spectacular fashion, but they were all about efficiency and clinical finishing. His strikes were crucial moments in Spain’s journey.
Olmo’s value to Spain goes beyond the scoresheet. His creativity and vision in midfield created numerous chances for teammates. His link-up play with Spain’s attackers was a constant threat, and his tireless work ethic epitomised Spain’s relentless style.
Sharing the Golden Boot with established names like Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala is a testament to Olmo’s rise as a key figure in European football. Though overshadowed by the emergence of Yamal, Olmo’s contribution to Spain’s historic victory cannot be understated. He is a complete midfielder, a vital cog in Luis de la Fuente’s well-oiled machine, with a bright future ahead.
Man of the Match: EURO 2024 final: Nico Williams
The name on everyone’s lips after Spain’s dramatic 2-1 victory over England in the EURO 2024 final was young winger Nico Williams. The 20-year-old Spaniard was named Man of the Match for a performance that epitomised Spain’s dominance throughout the tournament.
Williams wasn’t just energetic; he was a constant threat on the right flank. His pace and trickery tormented the English defence, creating numerous scoring opportunities for his teammates. Early in the second half, his moment arrived. Latching onto a perfectly weighted pass from Lamine Yamal, Williams cut inside and unleashed a powerful low drive into the far corner, sparking jubilation amongst the Spanish faithful.
This opening goal proved to be a turning point in the match. Williams continued to be a menace, drawing fouls and creating space for others. His work ethic was exemplary, tracking back tirelessly to support the Spanish defence.
Williams’ all-around performance was a masterclass in wing play. His tireless energy, clinical finishing, and tactical awareness solidified his place as one of the rising stars of European football. The future of Spanish football looks bright, and Nico Williams is undoubtedly leading the charge.
