The Republic S1-2
Season 2 of the award-winning political thriller The Republic picks up two years after the dramatic events of the first season, in the aftermath of Madame President Mulaudzi’s kidnapping and a coup attempt amidst a genuine citizen unrest. Mulaudzi might have cleaned up her cabinet (or has she?) but the country is still in a state of chaos, with protests, riots and power outages being the norm. How will she fix it, and who will stand in her way?
Season 1 of The Republic won seven SAFTAs in 2020, including Best TV Drama; Best Actress – Drama for Florence Masebe; Best Supporting Actor – Drama for Seputla Sebogodi; Best Directing – Drama for Johnny Barbuzano (The River) and Rea Rangaka (iNumber Number); Best Scriptwriting – Drama for Phathutshedzo Makwarela and Gwydion Beynon of Tshedza Pictures; and Best Cinematography – Drama for Ntobeko Dlamini (Ring of Lies, The River).
SAFTA winners Florence Masebe and Masasa Mbangeni return in Season 2 as President Mulaudzi and Bridget respectively, but the fireworks this season come from the modern-day Bonnie-and-Clyde pairing of Sizwe and Thina, played by Lemogang Tsipa (Shaka in Shaka iLembe) and Noxolo Dlamini (Silverton Siege, Jiva!).
Also joining the cast this season are SAFTA winners Bongile Mantsai (Knuckle City, Blood Psalms) and Thembi Nyandeni (Isibaya, Zone 14), as well as SAFTA nominee Bonnie Mbuli (Noughts + Crosses).
