Stream the biggest 2025 Emmy winners on Showmax

If you didn’t wake up to watch the Emmys from 2AM on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) this morning, and can’t wait for the repeat at 9PM, here’s your crib sheet to keep up with the conversation today.

Where can you watch the most winners in South Africa?

You can watch nine of last night’s winners on DStv and Showmax, more than on AppleTV+, who had 7, or Netflix, who had 5.

Who were the category winners?

• Outstanding Drama Series: medical drama The Pitt, currently airing at 9PM on Mondays on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) and Showmax
• Outstanding Comedy Series: AppleTV+’s Hollywood send-up The Studio
• Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series: Netflix’s Adolescence
• Outstanding Scripted Variety Series: Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, airing on M-Net in South Africa. The show, which is available to binge on DStv Stream, also won its eighth writing award in a row.

Who was sixth time lucky?

After being nominated five times as John Carter in ER, Noah Wyle was named Outstanding Lead Actor: Drama as Dr Michael "Robby" Robinavitch in The Pitt.

Wyle’s tux was made by FIGS, a scrubwear brand, and Wyle ended his speech by dedicating his award to America’s healthcare workers. “To anybody who’s going on shift tonight or coming off shift tonight, thank you for being in that job. This is for you.”

Katherine LaNasa also took home her first Emmy, for Outstanding Supporting Actress as charge nurse Dana Evans. At the Creative Arts Emmys the previous weekend, The Pitt had won Outstanding Casting: Drama, with Shawn Hatosy also picking up Guest Actor: Drama as Dr. Jack Abbott.

Did the Emmy speeches finally run on time?

Comedian Nate Bargatze hosted this year’s awards. In a novel attempt to keep the show running on time, he promised to donate $100 000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America – but qualified that the number would decrease every time someone’s speech went over 45 seconds.

Needless to say, not even a good cause was enough to keep speeches short. Hannah Einbender handled it best after collecting Outstanding Supporting Actress for Hacks. When the first-time Emmy winner noticed the balance dropping again, she promised to pay the difference, ending her speech with, “Go Birds, f*ck ICE, and free Palestine.”

While the money had inevitably disappeared by the end of the awards, Bargatze announced that CBS would donate $100 000 and he would personally add another $250 000.

Who was the most predictable winner?

Einbender’s Hacks co-star Jean Smart won Outstanding Actress: Comedy award for her role as comedian Deborah Vance – her fourth win from four seasons of the show.

All four seasons are available to binge on Showmax, with S4 starting on M-Net at 10PM on Wednesdays from this week. At the Creative Arts Emmys the previous weekend, Julianne Nicholson had also won Outstanding Guest Actress: Comedy as Dance Mom.

Who gave the best speech?

Jeff Hiller was one of the night’s biggest surprise winners, taking home Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy for the final season of Somebody Somewhere, which is available to binge on Showmax.

“I feel like I’m gonna cry because for the past 25 years I’ve been like, ‘World, I wanna be an actor’ and the world’s like, ‘Maybe computers’,” Hiller said to laughter at the beginning of his acceptance speech. “I just wanna say thank you to HBO for putting a show about sweaty, middle-aged people on the same network as the sexy teens of Euphoria.”

He thanked Somebody Somewhere’s writers, “who wrote a show about connecting and love in this time when compassion is seen as a weakness.”

After thanking his husband, he ended by celebrating his co-star Bridgett Everett. “You’ve changed my life and you told so many people to believe in themselves and they do.”

Who gave the most emotional speech?

Cristin Milioti won Outstanding Lead Actress: Limited Or Anthology Series as Sofia Falcone in The Penguin, which aired on M-Net and is now available to binge on Showmax.

The first-time winner’s speech sped from tears to exuberant joy, beginning with her admitting she’d written it on the back of notes she made in therapy – “so don’t look on the back.”

“It’s very hard to make sense of being alive right now in this world and so I’m deeply grateful for the bright spots,” she said. “And making this show with our incredible cast and our incredible crew and getting to inhabit this woman was a bright spot for me despite it being, like, very grisly.”

Her shoutouts included her “incredible family” for “supporting your strange kid and showing me movies that were very inappropriate for my age.”

She ended by saying, “I love you and I love acting so much,” before screaming with joy.

Who was the biggest snub?

Seventy-seven-year-old Kathy Bates had been the hot favourite to become the oldest ever Outstanding Actress: Drama winner for Matlock (which premiered on M-Net) but lost out to Severance star Britt Lower.

Colin Farrell had also been the favourite to take home Outstanding Actor: Limited or Anthology Series for his unrecognisable turn in The Penguin, but lost out to Stephen Graham for Adolescence.

The Penguin did better at the Creative Arts Emmys, where it won eight craft awards - the second most overall.

Who had the boldest fashion look?

Apart from winning Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music at the Creative Arts Emmys the weekend before, The White Lotus was snubbed this year, despite having three of the Supporting Actor and four of the Supporting Actress nominees.

The show did win the red carpet at least, with four of the cast making Vogue’s list of the best-dressed stars at the Emmys. K-pop star Lisa, who played Mook in Season 3, looked like she’d stepped out of a fairytale in her pink Lever Couture gown, while Sam Nivola, who played Lochlan, brought a sense of fun to his Dior suit with a floral-printed waistcoat. Michelle Monaghan and Sarah Catherine Hook also stunned in Rabanne and Miu Miu respectively.

But arguably the boldest fashion move was from Hacks star Megan Stalter, who rocked jeans, a white t-shirt and a black bag that said, “Cease Fire!”

What about The Creative Arts Emmys?

Additional winners to binge on Showmax include:
• 100 Foot Wave: Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series, Outstanding Cinematography
• The Righteous Gemstones: Outstanding Stunt Coordination: Comedy
• House of the Dragon (launched same-time on M-Net): Outstanding Period or Fantasy/Sci-Fi MakeUp (Non-Prosthetic)
• The Last of Us (launched same-time on M-Net): Outstanding Sound Editing
