Five of the best Liverpool vs Arsenal clashes at Anfield

Every Premier League game streams live on Showmax Pro Mobile, courtesy of SuperSport, so you can see all the action while you're on the go.

1994/95: Liverpool 3-0 Arsenal

It was the third season of the Premier League and many players were announcing themselves on the big stage. This was a game where a 19-year-old Robbie Fowler confirmed that he was a special talent that would go on to become a Liverpool legend.

In only the second game of the season against one of the best defences in England, Fowler found the back of the net three times within four minutes and 33 seconds that set a record for the fastest Premier League hat-trick.

The record lasted 21 years before Sadio Mane bettered the mark when he played for Southampton.

Fowler would end up scoring 163 Premier League goals and register eight more hat-tricks, but none more impressive than this one.

2003/04: Liverpool 1-2 Arsenal

There were many fixtures during “The Invincibles” season where Arsenal’s proud unbeaten record looked under threat and their trip to Anfield ended up being one of the sternest tests for Arsene Wenger’s legendary side.

When Harry Kewell gave Liverpool an early lead, it looked like the impossible dream might be coming to an end. Then Sami Hyypia couldn’t properly deal with a great Robert Pires free-kick and bundled it into his own net.

In the second half, Pires cut inside his defender and unleashed a curling shot from long range to win the game. It was one of his most memorable goals in a career that saw him score many crucial ones for the Gunners.

Arsenal went on to win, didn’t stop their unbeaten run and the rest is etched in history.

2008/09: Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal

With six games of the season to play, Liverpool were desperate to end a 19-year title drought and found themselves in a tight race with Manchester United at the top of the table.

In an extraordinary goal-fest at Anfield, their title challenge suffered a setback with Andrei Arshavin becoming the most unlikely villain.

The Russian had impressed at Euro 2008 which led to Arsenal snapping him up in the next January transfer market. He would go on to have a mixed career in the Premier League, but he will always be remembered for his feats in this game.

Arshavin ended up getting on the scoresheet four times, wheeling away seemingly in disbelief after each goal. He gave Arsenal the lead three times in that game but Liverpool still managed to salvage a point with an injury-time equaliser in a thrilling, beautifully bonkers game of football.

2013/14 Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal

In probably Liverpool’s most heartbreaking Premier League campaign that saw them narrowly missing out on their first Premier League title again, this performance should be seen as the highlight of the club’s season.

Arsenal were five points ahead of them going into that game and left the ground shellshocked after being mauled by the Reds.

It started perfectly for the home side when Martin Skrtl scored in the first minute. 20 minutes later, Liverpool were 4-0 up.

Anfield spent most of the second half swaying in joy when it became 5-0 shortly after the break. Mikel Arteta grabbed a consolation penalty, but an enormous statement had been made by Brendan Rodgers and his team.

It will always be remembered as a season of a slip and a near-miss, but it should also be credited as the time when Liverpool launched themselves as a thrilling attacking force capable of scorelines like this one.

2018/19 Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal

By now, this Premier League fixture had gained a reputation as one that had any goals in it and when they met in December 2018, Liverpool were in one of those relentless moods again.

By that time, Jürgen Klopp had entrenched his playing style into the team and the attacking play was thriving with the trio of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

All of them got on the scoresheet that day, but what made it special and unusual was that there was a hat-trick from Firmino. In most games, Firmino acted as the fulcrum while Salah and Mane grabbed the goals and fame.

The Liverpool fans always appreciated the Brazilian’s hard work on the field and delighted in this sublime performances getting rewarded with all the plaudits that come with a hat-trick.

Liverpool didn’t win the title that season, but memorably went on to break their duck in the next campaign. In Liverpool’s most successful period in the Premier League era, it’s hard to find a more dominant performance than this one.
