Simo Magwaza on his challenging role as De Klerk in Youngins
South African screen veteran Simo Magwaza is back in the spotlight as the no-nonsense Principal Ramathuba (aka “De Klerk”) in the third and final season of the hit Showmax Original Youngins, premiering on 19 September 2025.
With a career that spans over three decades and includes collaborations with global icons like Sean Connery, Ice Cube, and Don Cheadle, Magwaza is a household name both locally and internationally. But it’s his unforgettable roles in local productions like Generations, Yizo Yizo, The Queen, DiepCity, and now Youngins that have truly cemented his legacy.
As we gear up for Youngins Season 3, Magwaza shares his experiences working with the show’s young cast, the challenges of playing a strict educator, and lessons he’s learned along the way.
For most of your career, you’ve acted alongside adults. What was it like working with the much younger, high-energy cast on Youngins?
(Laughs) Acting with those kids took me straight back to my own school days! The only difference is that now I’m the one restoring order, not causing chaos. They truly created a fun, authentic high school atmosphere on set. I had a blast, but I’ll admit, there were moments when I had headaches trying to stay in character as the strict principal. Keeping up with those talented kids was an extreme sport for me!
Their energy was infectious, and it helped shape De Klerk’s character. Some of the things they’d throw at me during scenes were so unexpected and hilarious, I’d have to fight back laughter. What I really appreciated, though, was how respectful they were, both on and off camera. That made all the difference.
Every role teaches something new. What has playing Principal Ramathuba taught you?

This role really made me reflect on how times have changed. I grew up in an era where corporal punishment was the norm, but today that doesn’t fly; it often just fuels rebellion. So, I had to find ways to instil fear and discipline without resorting to me thinking my character had to resort to corporal punishment.
Being an educator, even in character, isn’t easy. Kids come with their own issues from home, and Ramathuba had to manage all of that. He wanted nothing more than to see these kids succeed – especially the Matrics – but the Olifants 5 made that nearly impossible. Still, beneath his strictness, he genuinely cared.
Was there a real-life principal who inspired your portrayal of De Klerk?
Absolutely. My Matric principal, the late Mr Mbatha, was always on my mind while building this character. He had a great balance – he allowed us to have fun but never let things get out of control. He maintained discipline while still being approachable, and I tried to channel that into De Klerk.
As a parent yourself, what has Youngins taught you about this generation?
This generation requires a whole new level of patience. Corporal punishment doesn’t work anymore, you have to guide them without alienating them. Youngins also opened my eyes to how social media acts like a second parent. These kids are constantly online, comparing themselves, facing body shaming and cyberbullying. Back in my day, I didn’t even know what the kid on the other side of the mountain was doing; now everything is public. As a parent, you’ve got to stay switched on and involved in their digital world too. It’s quite challenging but it’s a must to know what your children are consuming online.
Any parting words for the Olifants 5 as the show enters its final season?

Stay humble. I’m so proud to see Ayakha Ntunja and Kealeboga Masango thriving in Genesis and Inimba. To all five of them: you’re talented, but humility will take you further than talent ever could. Don’t let fame go to your head – just show up, do the work, and always respect your colleagues, especially the crew. They're the ones making sure you shine on screen.
A tribute to the late Nandi Nyembe
In a heartfelt moment, Magwaza also reflected on working with the beloved actress Nandi Nyembe, who recently passed away.
“That woman was nothing short of amazing. She was older than me, yet always showed me so much respect. It would leave me stunned. She was such fun to work with, and her humility left a lasting impression on me.
“I last saw her at a Wimpy with her son. She was so excited to see me, and I remember thinking, ‘Wait, you’re the legend here, not me!’
“We also worked together on iCala, and even though she wasn’t feeling well, she still gave it her all. That’s who Mam’ Nyembe was – a true professional who made sure the job was done. We’ve lost a giant, but her work and spirit will never be forgotten.”
As Youngins gears up for its final season, Magwaza’s performance as Principal Ramathuba promises to be one for the books, blending discipline, empathy, and old-school wisdom in a way only he can deliver.
